Don Sutton just announced that Brandon Webb will be having shoulder surgery tomorrow.

If this is true I don't think the Dbacks pick up his option.

Webb to undergo surgery Monday

By MARK MAYNARD / The Independent

ASHLAND — Arizona ace Brandon Webb’s season is officially over.

The right-hander will be undergoing surgery on Monday in Arlington, Texas to resolve problems with his right shoulder. Specialist Dr. Keith Meister, the Rangers’ team physician, will perform the operation, according to Webb’s father, Philip Webb.

Webb, 30, has gone through two extended periods of rest and strengthening exercises but has not been able to return to the mound. He has been sidelined since pitching on Opening Day back in April and feeling stiffness in his shoulder. The discomfort hasn’t gone away.

Webb, the 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner and the runner-up for the top pitching award the past two seasons, paid another visit to Meister this weekend.

Webb had hoped to return in September but the extended rest didn’t help and the surgery will finish his season. The recovery time for Webb will be determined after the operation is performed.

The Diamondbacks have to decide within five days after the end of the World Series whether to pick up Webb’s $8.5 million option for 2010 or pay a $2 million buyout.

“We’ve still got in the neighborhood of 100 days before we have to make that decision,” Arizona GM Josh Byrnes said last week. “He’s been tremendous pitcher for this organization and he’s obviously a tremendous person within the walls of the organization. We’re going to use all the information we can gather in the next 100 days or so to make the best decision.”

In the past six years, Webb has accumulated a record or 87-62 record with a 3.27 earned run average. During the past four years Webb’s average record was 17.5-9 while averaging more than 230 innings per season. Last year, he won 22 games with a 3.20 ERA

I can see us picking up his option for next year. The team would be paying just $6.5 million more to keep him over losing Webb. The D'backs would probably have to pay more than $6.5 million to pick up a decent starting pitcher next year.

I am actually happy to hear that Webb is getting surgery. The zero progress over the last few months has been frustrating for everyone.

I read that the surgery most likely will sideline him for all of next year and that if the D-Backs do not pick up the option, the Reds may go after him with a Chris Carpenter type deal like how the Reds GM did while he was with the Cards. Brandon grew up like 20 minutes from Cincinnati too.

By the way, I called it first.

Ugggh. That sucks. Webb was an easy guy to root for and did a great job for us for years. I hope that he returns at some point and can salvage his career. I have no idea what our rotation will look like next year outside of Haren, Max, and possibly Parker. Right now though I could see Parker starting next year in AAA.

Doesn't make sense to pay $8.5M if he is not going to play next year, and then he becomes a FA anyway. Decline the option, and try to sign him to an incentive laden contract, see if his loyalty is to ARZ.

From what I heard, Parker is a sure thing to start the season as the 4th or 5th starter next season and if not for some commitment in September, he would have been a call up then. David is gone, so it seems that Garlands option will be picked up and it sill be Haren, Max, Garland, Parker and TBD.

All right handers? Not saying you are wrong by any means. I just noticed that when reading the list.

Actually, TBD can pitch from both sides. He is good that way. :D

At least now everyone knows. And we just hope for the best for the future.

It would be a shame if Webby never pitched for Arizona again.

Diamondbacks' Webb Has 'Cleanup' on Shoulder, Which Team Calls Good News

NEW YORK -- Brandon Webb underwent a debridement of his right shoulder Monday, which was the best-case scenario.

Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch said Webb would not throw for 3-4 months. But agent Jonathan Maurer said via text message that Webb will start throwing in October.

Webb, Arizona's ace, has not pitched since throwing four innings on Opening Day. the surgery was performed by Keith Meister, the Rangers' team physician.

"They didn't have to repair anything," Hinch said. "It sounds like it was good news for us."

As for whether Webb could be ready for Opening Day 2010, Hinch said, "I don't think it's out of the question. But I don't think it's guaranteed either."

Maurer, however, wrote that "a full recovery [is] expected by or before spring training 2010."

The next question is for whom will he pitch in 2010. It seems quite possible that the Diamondbacks decline their $8.5 million option on Webb, instead paying a $2 million buyout.

Webb, 30, won the 2006 NL Cy Young Award and over 2006-08 was 56-25 with a 3.13 ERA.

A debridement is the "removal of non-healthy tissues and foreign material from a wound or burn to prevent infection and permit healing." It was not immediately clear if it was on Webb's labrum or rotator cuff or both.

I thought that Garland didn't like pitching in the altitude here?

Why is it a sure thing that Davis is gone? He's been pretty solid.

Great news about Webb. Because he didn't need major surgery, I hope the Diamondbacks pick up his option. Now they need to find a sucker to trade for Byrnes.
