CHICAGO -- Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb was sent back to Phoenix with soreness in his right elbow.
The team made the announcement Thursday before the doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs. Webb is expected to miss his scheduled start Saturday against Houston at Chase Field. An MRI on Wednesday showed no structural damage.
"How much we push back, we'll see whether it's just a couple of days or a skip," Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes said. "Saturday is unlikely."
Webb is having a breakout season. The 27-year-old is 12-4 with a 2.74 with three complete games and made his first All-Star team. He leads the majors with 167 1/3 innings and is tied for the NL lead in wins.
Byrnes said Webb has experienced some recurring soreness in the elbow since the All-Star break. The soreness returned after his last start on Monday, when he threw eight innings to earn a 15-4 victory over the Cubs.
The Diamondbacks start a nine-game homestand Friday.
"He's felt it one other time this year, and then it wasn't there," manager Bob Melvin said. "Guys get this stuff all the time. But this was the second time he kind of felt it, so we wanted to make sure we were proactive. There's nothing in the MRI, it's a little teeny bit of swelling in there."
Webb has thrown more than 200 innings the last two seasons.
"He's our most irreplaceable player," Byrnes said. "He should be the Cy Young winner, at least two-thirds of the way through. But at the same time we have him signed through 2010. We're going to make sure it's right before we put him out there."
Let's hope it's nothing major..
