i dunno if someone's already answered this, but how come webb's era isn't rated as the highest in the league, or even the dbacks for that matter? hasn't he hit the innings pitched minimum yet?

It is the lowest in the league, which means the best.

To qualify for an ERA title, you have to have pitched at least as many innings as games your team has played.

Right now, Webb has pitched 91 innings, while the team has played 89, so Webb in the NL ERA leader today (if you look at a site like si.com, you will see him leading the league). He will retain this until Friday night, when the Dbacks play there 92nd game. He will qualify again when he pitches next, provided he pitches enough innings.

heh... When I first saw this thread, I thought it was about the dawning of a "new era" (headed by Brandon Webb, perhaps as the successor to Randy/Curt) ... if it was printed as ERA, that is an entirely different matter

Interestingly, only three D'Backs meet this qualification through last nights' game. Webb (2.18 ERA/91.0 innings), Miguel Batista (2.80 ERA/103.0 inings), and Elmer Dessens (4.75 ERA/108.0 innings).

oh, i missed that. that was supposed to be lowest ERA. yahoo sports finally updated, so brandon has the lowest era right now. i was wondering how come it had been miggy for the past few weeks. btw, how come webb's getting snubbed in the rookie of the year/cy young/all-star game projections. i mean, what makes him so different from dontrelle willis? sure, maybe 2 wins or so...but prior to his last start, webby had a lower era! any thoughts?

Still East Coast. Same time zone. Most of the eastern sportswriters are in bed before Webb finishes pitching.

Geographically speaking , yes.

It's a million miles away, baseball wise, from New York, Philly, etc. It's easy for us in AZ to play that "east coast bias card", but not when you are comparing the Marlins to the D'Backs....sorry.

i agree. btw, i saw this article. i don't remember where. the guy was answering fan mail. someone asked if webb is for real or a fluke. he answered that webb's the real deal, but not as good as his numbers indicate. he also said that webb has "four major league pitches and above average control."

Man, this guy either hasn't been paying attention, or hasn't looked hard at the stats. webb keeps getting groundballs not really because of his "control" but mainly because of his sinker. geezes, this guy's probably another dontrelle willis fan...doesn't pay attention to anyone else.

Well - Yao Ming played in the all-star game in the NBA, and was dubbed the runaway winner of the ROY - but Amare ended up winning. Willis can go, and pitch (Brandon, having pitched Sunday, would not likely to be able to pitch anyway). We'll let Brandon rest for the second half push.
