Ice Cube to Play Kotter
Source: Dimension Films
March 14, 2006

Dimension Films today announced plans to make a feature film based on the hugely popular and entertaining classic television show Welcome Back, Kotter with Ice Cube attached to star in the title role. Ice Cube and Matt Alvarez are producing the project through their production company, Cube Vision, along with Andrew Lazar. Tom Brady is in negotiations to write the script and direct. The announcement was made today by Bob Weinstein. Dimension acquired the motion picture rights from the original creators of the television series, Gabe Kaplan and Alan Sacks.

Welcome Back, Kotter is about a brash, young teacher teacher (Ice Cube) who returns to his tough, inner city alma-mater, where he's assigned to teach a new generation of the same sort of underprivileged, unmotivated, troublemaking students that he used to be.

Bob Weinstein stated, "We are excited to introduce 'Kotter' to a new generation, with Ice Cube putting his own brand of comedy on this legendary character."

"There was no bigger fan of the original show than me, and I'm very excited to be able to put a new twist on it," said Ice Cube.

Gabe Kaplan said, "We were skeptical about selling 'Kotter' because making a great movie from a TV show can be challenging. After meeting with the Weinsteins, we knew they were the right ones to bring this project – which has been beloved by so many people over the years – to the big screen."

The original television series Welcome Back, Kotter, starring Hollywood legend John Travolta and Gabe Kaplan, aired between 1975 and 1979 and received four Emmy nominations.

Richard Saperstein, head of production for Dimension Films, Matthew Stein, senior vice president of production, and Alex Franklin, director of development, will oversee the project on behalf of Dimension.

I didnt see "The Honeymooners" remake, but this sounds equally bad. That being said, it will make $50M easy.

That is my exact sentiment....

I loved watching this show back then (even though I was 2-3 during its last season, but remember watching the first couple years of the series when it was in syndication around that time).... I bet John Travolta and Gabe Kaplan (I guess he sold the rights out of desperation for money, but still) are livid... Heck.. .even Ron Palillo is going "ooooh-ooooh-ooohh-oohhh", but in gratification.. but in morbid pain......

Sorry.. I just cannot figure out/fathom why Hollywood has seemingly run out of good ideas and now more than ever revive to me movies/tv shows that are cult classics and shouldnt have their legacies tarnished in anyways...

I apologize if I'm overreacting, but I just cannot tolerate this recent trend whatsoever...... I mean.. "the Sweathogs" shouldnt be ruined in any manner....

Kaplan owned the rights? Hell, he should have produced the film himself. I would have at least given that a shot--there would have been a chance that it was true to the series.

I can't get the theme out of my head now. I like it, but I know it's going to be with me for the rest of the day.

Just wait until it gets redone by some rap group, or Ice Cube himself. :|
