In a vacuum, great value signing for a very productive pass rusher over the past two years. This is a win.

As a whole, we are going to need to add speed on defense because our front 7 is pretty slow outside of Simmons with our current personnel.

I think we should all recognize that Vance apparently prefers vets on defense and needs younger players to prove it before he hands them spots.
curious whether you think thats good or not. My gut reaction is "good strategy, trust the vets."

... but then I think of the mishandling of Simmons for 1/2 a season and there are clearly some drawbacks to this strategy

I think it’s very valuable. Like it said he’s 8th in QB pressures over the last 2 years and your getting him for pretty cheap

who did you want?
I wanted to keep Reddick at all costs.

Hicks, Watt, Jones, Golden, & Gardeck coming off an ACL. What a tremendously slow a__ front 7 group. Gonna be something when QBs like Trevor Lawerence & Carson Wentz get away from it.

2 issues with this strategy and they don't make it right or wrong.

1 - It can make it more costly to acquire highly athletic players. Free agents who are difference makers are generally expensive vs top draft picks who are cheap. Also, free agents generally have a more difficult out-performing their contracts.

2 - It can make it tough to justify using a top draft pick on a defensive player. NFL is a instant gratification business. If your first round pick isn't producing, that can be a problem. Also, rookies value is based upon their cap savings. If they aren't producing, you aren't taking advantage of that value.

I agree that it is tough to build when you are constantly letting things go. IMO, it all depends on what Keim does with that money. If he signs Linsley, it is worth letting Reddick go. If he signs a bunch of trash or if Reddick comes in lower than expected, I feel your concern has more validity.

If I am drafting for Vance, I am going after highly athletic defensive players in rounds 2 and/or 3. Guys who I am not going to get killed for drafting when he is making them earn a role but who also have the ability to outperform where they were drafted OR if I am taking a defensive player in round 1, I am looking for guys who are polished and athletic.

Essentially, I am staying away from the Rousseau's of the draft and looking at the guys like Jaelan Phillips (outside of his injury issues of course).

A perfect example would be taking a player like Jayson Oweh in round 2 knowing that he needs time, but can get that behind a guy like Chandler Jones and has first round athletic talent.

I also share the concerns about the front 7 being slow but it will be a high motor group full of thumpers. We'll probably have our best run defense in years but I can already see the frustrating screens and draws killing us on 3rd downs.

Reddick has been average to below average for 3 seasons and 15 games lol. I’m not losing sleep over Reddick

Hey man did u sleep enough?
I got a whopping four and a half hours, haha. I had to be at a friend's office to help out this morning. Also, just so you know, that wasn't me trashing Reddick or anything, just saying that door is probably closed now.
