Thinking of players who are overpaid and underperforming, Wells (as a LG) comes to mind. We gave him a fairly large contract and frankly, he's not worth it right now. How much money would we save if we were to part ways with him?

Just thinking of ways this team can save money. Maybe we could cut Wells and pickup more of a natural guard at 1/3 the cost and get equal production.

I would prefer to cut Gandy, slide Wells to RT, move Levi to LT and pickup a Guard, but Gandy's contact is so reasonable this year it makes that scenario highly unlikely.

Wells is great...as a versatile backup. As it stands, we cannot lose him. Sadly, he's possibly our best option as a starting G. If we cut him, we have no depth at the position, and bad depth at the OT position. What we need is a real grinder guard that is also athletice (ahem, FANECA), and to make Wells a high-quality overpaid backup.

If i'm not mistaken Gandy's cap hit for this year is 6.3 mil unless he restructured or something. I expect him to be extended with him getting about 8 mil signing bonus for 3 more years. But right now his contract isn't reasonable.

I thought it was more like 3 million or so. Wasn't his contarct all front loaded last year? That's what we did with last years FA signings. It was supposed to give us all kinds of cap space this year.

Wells hit is only 1.1 mil which is fairly reasonable even if he is relegated to backup duty for someone that can play all the positions on the line. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of him being starting LG, but he certainly would be great depth and not too expensive considering his versatility.

Then we need to strongly consider cutting Gandy and going with Wells and Brown as our Tackles. We can focus on 1 or 2 depth signings with the savings.

What? Why? Cap savings for the sake of cap savings?

Gandy exceeded expectations last season. Extend him to create the savings.

Mmm, I'd be worried about that. That would put Elton Brown or Keydrick Vincent (sp?) in at starter at G...no thanks! Now, if we added a solid guard (wonder who?), then I'd be tempted. Still worried about having Wells in the starting 5, though.

Wells looked good at RT when he played there.

I'm saying cut Wells assuming we can sign Faneca or another starting LG of a higher quality than Wells. Maybe offering a larger roster bonus next year (when we should have more cap space).

Gandy did play well. Not spectacular, but well. He's also old and is on the downside of his career.

I would not mess with Gandy at this point. He is just not the weak link on this line it is Wells. Even 6.8 Million for a starting LOT is not really that bad ...

I agree Gandy has reached his ceiling last year, I wouldn't expect him to get better. I can live with him for another year at LT, but I really don't anticipate him playing at a high (or even above average) level for too much longer. Extend him for 3 years to lower his cap hit this year, and make sure you get a good LT prospect in the draft this year. I'd also bring in Travell Wharton during FA.

Personally I don't think Wells is that bad at all.

dont mess with the consensus, 11

the opinion that Wells isnt very good has been posted so many times it is now stated as an unquestioned fact

Surely you jest....you must be masquerading as Reggie. Basad on your thinking you want to roll the dice with onr of the most important positions on the team, get rid of a guy who had a solid above average season, huh? I don't think you will find too many associates under the tent with you on this plan.

Dude, Mike Gandy's 29--for most OL, that's just beginning their prime. Offensive linemen play into their mid-30s all the time.

I think that we're looking to add--not subtract--from our OL group. I like all the starters except Wells, but I think that if we somehow found a veteran OLG in free agency, we could all be really happy. I think that Wells is a great swing-OL, able to substitute at all five OL positions when needed. But I think that he was a MAJOR reason we couldn't run the ball as effectively as we wanted to.

But he earned his money last season, and will be well worth the price this year. I just wish that he had some competition behind him.
