The panic hiring of Bill Stewart was exposed last night. The coaching staff had a complete meltdown and was the reason the better team lost the game.

I agree the panic hiring of Bill Stewart was a huge mistake. There is a reason he is a 50 something year old career assistant.

I find it invalid or at least arguable that the " better team " lost. Dan Hawkins had a very strong career at Boise State and can recruit. He now has good players to work with. Overall, they probably have better personnel than WVU. Maybe RR knew the cupboard was diminishing and one of the reasons he took the Michigan job.

WVU had a great run under RR. One could easily make the comparison between the Coker hiring at U of M and Stewart at WVU. Did not work out for Miami and does not bode well for WVU. BTW, it might be a long time before Miami starts winning. Shannon has a lot to learn.

Guys, why I like that you are even remotley interested in WVU football :) I must say that it is a little too early to say the Bill Stewart hire was a bad one.

I think the better arguement is that they lost 8 STARTERS on defense, and 3 of their biggest playmakers on offense (Reynaurd, Slaton, Schmitt)

Expectations were too high. End of story!

it was a bad hire

just because coker won a NC with davis' players doesn't mean he was a good hire

if anything it could be more dire at WVU because stewart will need to stock the cupboards up and i'm not sure how much clout he'll bring to the process

wally - i agree shannon has a lot to learn, but he also is figuring a lot out pretty quickly - i have confidence he'll get it done

one of my coworkers is a WVU fan and we've spoken about this a lot - the hire is really close to the knee jerk reaction at miami where a guy comes in, lifts a program up to prominence and leaves on bad terms (davis and shalala weren't that tight) so the administration hires the loyal guy, the good guy, the long term assistant and feel good guy ............ the wrong guy

Like I said it is waaay to early to say it was a bad hire. I was telling WVU fans after last season that their expectations were probably too high (and of course I am guilty of that too) but when you lose 8 starters on defense, Steve Slaton, Darius Raynaurd, and Owen Schmitt on offense that is tough to recover from.

The other thing is Stweart hired a lot of very good assistants on his staff. All from winning programs and probably the best recruiter in the south (doc holiday- from Florida). I am not ready to give up on Stew quite yet with such a new team.

Alos Pat White has missed a lot of time this year due to injuries.

Stewart looks like a bad hire to me. I'm ready to give up on Kragthorpe at Louisville after just 1 1/2 seasons. Sometimes you just know it's time to move on.
