Mar. 27—GRAND FORKS — The window to apply for the UND men's hockey coaching job has closed.

By 11:55 p.m. Wednesday night, the applicants were in, sending the search into the next phase.

UND's human resource department will screen the applicants, remove those who do not fit the required criteria and then deliver them to athletic director Bill Chaves.

Once Chaves receives them, he will begin scheduling Zoom interviews with the top candidates.

Interviews are likely to begin as soon as Friday.

When Chaves hired a football coach last winter, he held a second round of interviews in quick succession of the first round.

The hiring process is structured by state law.

This week, Chaves and deputy athletic director Erik Martinson have been getting feedback from. . . just about everyone.

Chaves left his door open for any current players to come speak with him about the job and the program this week. A large number of them did.

Former players also have been contacting the department to share their opinions.

There has been a push from players who have played under associate coach Dane Jackson — past and current — to hire him. It includes prominent NHL players. Jackson has been at UND as an assistant for 19 years.

There also has been a push from other alumni groups to slow down the search and take time to get a larger candidate pool and make sure the hire is the right one.

With the

opening to non-graduates Sunday, UND still appears to be expediting the search.

The quick search has led many to wonder whether UND already has its next candidate lined up. According to multiple sources, that is not the case. It is an open search, which is why so many factions of alums have been contacting Chaves and Martinson to share their thoughts.

It is the first time UND has considered external candidates for the UND hockey coaching job since Dean Blais was hired 31 years ago.

When Blais was hired in 1994, it was a five-week process that involved a 13-person search committee.

Blais left for the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets on June 25, 2004. The Herald reported five days later that Dave Hakstol would be the next head coach. At the time, state law required the job to be open for 30 days if UND went with an external candidate. Blais urged UND not to do that. Athletic director Roger Thomas took Blais' advice.

In 2015, UND hired Brad Berry as head coach hours after Hakstol left to come the head coach of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers.

Berry served as UND's head coach for 10 years, winning an NCAA national championship and five Penrose Cups.

UND let go of Berry on Sunday after UND finished the season 21-15-2 and missed the NCAA tournament.
