The Cardinals are still weak at LB. Apparently, no FA's are signing and the draft pool at LB is thin. What do you think Whiz has planned?

Good question...

What LB's might fall to us in rd 2?

I was hoping for Patrick Willis but after the Senior Bowl/Combine, he is definitely a #1 pick.

Paul P from Penn State?

There's a good chance that Jon Beason would fall to us in the second. Also, look out for Zak DeOssie in the third, he had an excellent combine.

Available FA's that would be an upgrade over Huff and "shouldn't" break the bank:

Donnie Edwards
Kawika Mitchell
Tommy Polley

Take a chance on a guy:

Edge Hartwell (inj issues)

I was wondering about Hartwell myself. However, one of the Falcons message boards didn't have anything good to say about him, calling him Hurtwell and Hartlesswell.

Extremely overated.

In the last 15 years havent we drafted a lot of LB's in round two that never work out?
Good point. I would be interested to see all of them. The only one in recent memory that proved his worth has been Dansby.

We did pretty good with Dansby but missed on:

Levar Fisher (2002)
Raynoch Thompason (2000)
Johnny Rutledge (1999)

It's looking like the draft will be used to fill the holes at LB.

First round:

Gains Adams from Clemson. Not the most ideal situation but it could be considered part of the evential move to a 3-4 defense. In addition to running with the DL Adams also worked out with the LBs at the Combine to show teams he can transition to LB. He looked very smooth running the LB drills and should have no problem making the transition.

Second Round:

Lawarence Timmons from FSU and John Beason from Miami are two guys that could possibly fall to us with our 2nd round pick similar to how Dansby fell to us in the second round a few years back.

Let me give you an outlier scenario:

With Joe Thomas gone, the Cards trade down with Miami to #9 and pick up an extra second. Fins take Quinn

At #9 the Cards take -- Patrick Willis, LB Ole Miss. Fast, smart, big hitter who is great in coverage. SEC defensive player of the year. Played inside in college but plenty fast enough to move outside. Immediately goes to SLB allowing Dansby to go to WLB. Gives the Cards another impact front seven player.

Before anybody scoffs -- it is a position of need and he could very well be the BPA at that point. BTW -- if choosing between Willis and Leron Landry -- I would go Willis. Just as good a player and I put more value on a front seven player than a free safety.

Regardless of who we may yet sign as a FA, we still need a contributing OL in the draft. We should be able to get a good one in Rd 2, and I think we should. Its unlikely we can get help from a day 2 LB, so that leaves rd#3.....if at all.

I am not going to scoff but I think the debate would be between Willis vs Levi Brown. Either one would be a solid pick and would net us an additional #2 pick .

I think LT is our biggest need followed by OLB and I don't see Levi Brown as a LT but he could certainly play RT and move Wells to LT.

P.S. I would think we will get an extra first day pick as a result of the loss of BIG.

I don't know about Brown. He reminds me of Big in that he lacks that Nasty streak I want to see in Offensive Linemen. Plus like Big I believe that he will struggle against the faster DEs in the NFL.

I think I would go for Willis if this trade happened. In fact I would do it in a heart beat if they were offering up a second rounder to move up. I highly doubt they would offer a pick that high.

With 2 picks in the Second round you could land a CB and an OT. That would be awesome!

According to the pick value chart...

The 5th pick is worth 1700pts.

The 9th pick is worth 1350pts.

The 44th pick in rd 2 is worth 490pts

So, we would have to make up 140pts...close to our 4th rd pick.

My guess is Miami would do it for a QBOF.

Levi will struggle against the faster DE's, which is why he is a RT prospect IMO. He has the size of Willie Anderson of Cincy.

Yeah a 3rd or 4th rounder would make more sense depending on who drops to us.

Actually, the points would be close to this:

We trade teh 5th pick and our 4th rd pick to Miami for the 9th pick and their 2nd rd pick.

1796 points Cards
1840 poinst Miami

CF -- my assumption is that in much the same way QBs taken high in the first round get a "QB Premium" in their contract relative to the slotted value, the Cards would get a QB premium in the trade up.

Those charts are indicative, and with the possibility of Minn, Tex and Miami all interested in Quinn, you may get the extra value out of Miami.

That being said -- its still rampant speculation on my part.
