A few weeks ago, followers of "the other" Cardinal team had the privilege of watching the opening of the new stadium in StL. (They know how to do things right - I believe that before the season began, they were close to being 100% sold out for just about every game).

A week before the season opener, they played a preseason game between the Cardinal AAA and AA minor league teams. They used the experience as a "dry run" to get rid of any last minute logistical kinks before the season opener. (There were a few - long lines at concession stands and an abnormal number of people walking around the prominade throughout the game - to see all the amenities - since the game itself had little meaning anyway).

I got to see the season opening ceremonies because FSN-Midwest ran a 2-hour pregame special. (I doubt FSN-AZ will do anything quite that cool). The ceremony featured (a) the Budweiser Clivesdales (b) a parade of red Ford convertables around the perimeter of the field with former Cardinal stars, Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Willie McGee and Bruce Sutter along (c) each each member of the roster and coaching staff riding in a convertable as part of the convoy and then introduced individually. (and more).

The Bidwills should consider (a) quietly putting on some sort of "dry run" event to get the kinks out (maybe featuring a couple of local Pop Warner games), (b) build into their ceremony the introduction of each Cardinal coach and player (with personal highlights shown on the JumboTron) and some sort of tribute to past Cardinal stars who were hall of famers and/or had their jersey numbers retired. - perhaps in the form of banners or plaques on a wall or stanchions and (c) NFL Network should definitely be invited to the party to cover the festivities as a non-prime time event in the same way they covered one of the Cardinal minicamps last season.

One of the hallmarks of a championship organization is that it "finishes." In this instance, this means (a) not resting on the laurels of building the stadium but continuing to do things first class and (b) going on to win the Super Bowl.

Both of them?

If I were running the opening ceremonies I'd have a reunion of all the Cardinals draft busts. That would be fun to watch.

And now, lets give a warm welcome to the "Second Round Busts":

Anthony Thompson (90)
Mike Jones (91)
Tony Sacca (92)
Chuck Levy (94)
Leeland McElroy (96)
Johnny Rutledge (99)
Raynoch Thompson (00)
Michael Stone (01)
Levar Fisher (02)

It boggles the mind to think that in a 12 year period and 14 second round picks-- they drafted only three "above average" NFL players: Frank Sanders (95), Jake Plummer (97) and Corey Chavous (98)
