RALEIGH, N.C. ― Florida basketball is a No. 1 seed for just the third time in school history.
The Florida Gators (30-4) are hoping to handle those lofty expectations and make a deep NCAA Tournament run, beginning Friday night when they face 16-seed Norfolk State.
Florida is seeking its first NCAA Tournament win since knocking off Virginia Tech 75-70 in overtime in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.
Florida has won 12 of its last 13 games and is coming off its fifth SEC Tournament title in school history after beating Tennessee 86-77 in the SEC Tournament finals on Sunday.
"Really, really fortunate and happy to be here," said Florida basketball coach Todd Golden, who is 70-33 in three seasons at UF. "Really proud of the season that our players have had to this point. 30 wins, winning the SEC Championship last week in the tournament, and earning the 1 seed is something we're really proud of, and we're hoping we're just getting started."
Norfolk State (24-10) also earned an automatic bid to March Madness by winning its third MEAC Tournament title in the last five years under 12th-year head coach Robert Jones, The Spartans are led by grad transfer guard Brian Moore Jr., who is averaging 18.4 points and 3.1 assists per game. Florida is led by consensus first-team All-American point guard Walter Clayton Jr., who is averaging 17.5 ppg and 4.3 assists.
Florida and Norfolk State are slated to tip off at 6:50 p.m. ET on Sunday from the Lenovo Center (cap. 19,500) in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Florida and Norfolk State will air on TNT and stream on Sling. Ian Eagle will handle play-by-play duties with Bill Raftery and Grant Hill as the color analysts. Tracy Wolfson will work courtside.
Per BetMGM, Florida basketball is a 28.5-point favorite over Norfolk State The over/under is 142.5 points.
The Florida-Norfolk State game will air on AM 850 and FM 98.1 in Gainesville and across the state on the Gator Radio Network. Sean Kelley will handle play-by-play duties, with former Gator great Lee Humphrey as the color analyst.
