Let me start by saying in my season preview I said Detroit was 50/50, Indy was a win and Dallas would be a loss. So actually results-wise nothing's changed. However the future looks like my predictions are in jeopardy.

Next I saw one of the greatest performances ever by a veteran receiver. Sadly much like the Super Bowl, Fitz' greatness wasn't enough.

I've been watching football for more than half a century. So I rarely encounter something new. Last night I did. I've never seen a 3 man rush totally humiliate a 5 (at times 6) man defensive line. While you can yell at the players I've got to point my finger at the coaching. Did you see any double-team blocks? I didn't. Rarely was a back kept in to help. Gresham was assigned to single block a rusher a tackle couldn't block. Plays that worked and slowed the rush, like the inside screen to Fitz, weren't repeated. The obvious, admittedly not highly desirable, option of moving Veldheer back to LT and Wetzel to right was never tried. Whether it's the line coach, the OC or BA, this was dereliction of duty by all.

The receivers played well (Fitz unworldly), but again they need to be coached to leave a little more boundary cushion. It was sad with the game on the line they didn't have a short, effective red zone go-to play. That again says as much about the coaches as the players. I was okay with the choice to go for a TD.

Despite Bethel getting beat, he played a fairly good game. TM was undisciplined and displayed poor tackling technique. He must be gotten under control. He's forgotten it's a team game. He did make a great play on Elliot. The run defense overall has been much better than I expected.

The defense as a whole played a solid game and was likely tired in quarter 4. So far Nkemdiche is as useless as I predicted he'd be when drafted. At least with Reddick they drafted a player they didn't have to red shirt.

The Cards' safeties played better, but this is a much weaker safety group than the one they let walk away.

For those of you old enough to remember Simeon Rice, Golden must be déjà vu. Rice has immense talent, but he had a one track mind. Game after game from his DE position he would charge the QB often ignoring ball carriers going the other way. Golden needed to trust the interior of the Cards' defense until he locates the ball. They should test his vision. Mauro was invisible again. Peters had a decent game.

Reddick was okay but like most rookies got pulled out of position. Bynes never saw a pass he could cover.

The tight ends rarely blocked effectively. Gresham is not worth close to $4 mil. Only Keim didn't know that. Of course compared to the rest of the unit, he looks like a Pro Bowler.

Finally there's Palmer. With time to throw I'm confident he beats Dallas. He should have retired for his own safety.

So what's all this mean for the future. Well this isn't a Super Bowl team. It's probably not a playoff team. The defense is good enough to win a few. The offense can handle a few bad defenses. Figure this is about a 7-9 team. The overall league mediocrity works in the Cards' favor. The sad part is they likely won't even be entertaining.

Damn. We aren't good enough to make the playoffs and not bad enough to get a top draft pick.

Good take Harry.

I have never been so I unexcited during a game as I have with this coaching staff since last year. They seem to negate the strength of the roster needlessly at times.

During a 6 on 3 line play, we had a pulling guard! Where was he going? Who was he going to block on a pass play?

We have seen some bad teams, but at least you know they are bad and cheer for when they transcend their ability. Now we get to squirm as potential lay dormant to strange in-game coaching decisions.

I don't think the D was gassed. After the FG and before the kickoff, the D players were all grouped together near kicking end of the sideline hopping up and down ready to get on the field. Of course then the big play to Badger's man put an end any hope they had.

It's still early on Reddick, but this might be a good comparison. He got burned bad last week in Indy when the TE cut outside and Reddick just kept running inside. Let's check back on him in 3 or 4 yrs; that's about how long it takes most LBs and DLs adjust to and learn the game.

Exactly welcome to the purgatory that is forever mediocrity. Luckily it should be short lived because we will SUCK next year.

ILBs almost always make an immediate impact or none at all. Vontaze Burfict vs Kevin Minter. Not worried about Reddick right now; its way early.

I believe the comments post-game indicated that Golden was supposed to crash down inside on read option and Reddick was supposed to be the outside contain on Dak if he kept it, however the rookie got sucked in and failed his assignment a couple times. It makes Golden look bad to us fans because we don't know the assignments, but really, he was doing what his coaches told him to do. Reddick was supposed to move to his left and make the tackle.

If this is true, then this just further proves how poor the coaching is.

First of all, Dak ran the read option and bootlegs to Golden's side because he knew Golden was crashing every play...in fact, it became so predictable that the Cowboys decided not to block Golden at all. Each time, Golden abandoned contain. You cannot ask an ILB to then take contain, unless you flex him to the edge (which never happened). You could ask the SS to take contain, but he was not lined up on Golden's side. We saw how WIDE open Dak was on EVERY read option, bootleg and sprint out. The Cardinals' defensive design was outrageously bad...and NEVER was an adjustment made.

yup

S.O.C. are back

I would not go that far. Every team has peaks and valleys. Its not like the Pats, or Green Bay was good when they needed to find the next QB.

The Packers sucked without Farve/Rogers

The Patriots were bad, then solid with Bledsoe (kinda like the Cardinals now), and then got Brady.

The ultimate example is in our own division, it took a long time for the Niners to find success once Steve Young retired, and wasn't until Kaepernick and Harbaugh came through that the team has some success, but that quickly fell apart.

The Cardinals have been a pretty good team as of late, this is not Sun Devil Stadium Cardinals, not at all. Everything is great when everything is going well, and now we will see what Steve Keim and Mike Bidwill are made of.

This season is maddening for sure, many can argue that instead of going through the re-building process next year, it should have happened this year.

It what it is at this point. Best thing the Cardinals can do is sort out who is the core for the next generation of Cardinals football, and hopefully start drafting players from top colleges and get NFL talent.

This small school, "we are smarter than everyone", scouting and drafting HAS to stop.

IMO OC Goodwin is way over-rated by the Cards. BA calls the plays and Goodwin is responsible for the OL which is a disaster. When will BA ever hold his coaches responsible for the play of the team?

each of those teams had a decade of success,..because-franchise QB....back to back in green bays case... back to back in SF's case too.... but yeah,...they didnt have one in line when Young went down and look what happened.
To me S.O.C.'s are mediocrity...just good enough to miss out on the best players in the draft, just good enough to never get our own franchise QB.
and that is exactly what I see on the field....5-11...6-10....7-9... whatever... just one win too many to get the guy we need

I think Reddick can develop into the player we wanted Bucannon to be as he has better size to succeed...my real question is how do you play them together without completely changing what we ask our DL to do up front which would mean changing personnel completely.

Here's the thing: they're not going to play together. Bucannon is gone in a year. He's not a core player; there are tons of too big/slow safeties that you can get in the midrounds of the draft if you really need 'em.

If Reddick is to play ILB, I see him as a speed guy, like Bucannon. You still need a thumper. Dansby can be that guy, except for the age factor.

I don’t know about that. LaVonte David & Kwon Alexander are regarded as one of the top ILB duos in the league & they’re both 6’1 around 230lbs. Nearly the same frame as Reddick.

Today's game is all about speed to the ball and speed to cover. The days of the rugged two-down Mike LB are pretty much over.

I totally agree with everything that Harry said but I think he also skipped over a key problem area for the Cardinals. Special teams!!!!

Our stellar Special Teams coach is back yet again. So far his crack unit has missed a field goal in every game and managed to average a league low 2.5 yards per punt return. Oh and the Cardinals haven't had a kick return longer than 23 yards yet they still bring it out of the End Zone almost every time.

:bang:

DREADFUL!!!!!
