Unlike in years past, the NBA no longer slots the top eight seeds in each conference to begin postseason play.
Instead, the Nos. 7-10 seeds in each conference go to the NBA Play-In Tournament, a new-ish format (it began in 2020 before being officially adopted in 2022) brought on by the league to add another layer of competition to determine which of the straggler seeds can earn their way into postseason proper.

Here's what fans should know:
The SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament pits the No. 7 and 8 seeds in each conference against one another as well as the No. 9 and 10 seeds against each other.
The winner of that No. 7 vs. 8 matchup punches an official ticket to the NBA postseason as the No. 7 seed (where they then face the No. 2 seed in their conference).
The loser of that matchup moves on to face the winner of the No. 9 vs. 10 game. Whoever wins that second faceoff moves on to face the No. 1 seed in the conference as the No. 8 seed in the playoffs.
Who will Cavs play? Cavs' 1st-round playoff opponent will come from NBA Play-In Tournament. Scouting the teams
The win-and-advance format is akin to March Madness in college basketball.
This year, the NBA Play-In Tournament begins on Tuesday, April 15.
That day will feature the No. 7 vs. 8 matchup in the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference.
The No. 9 and 10 seeds play against each other the following day, Wednesday, April 16.
After that, the final showdown to determine the No. 8 seed moving on to face the No. 1 squad in each conference will be played on Friday, April 18.
Tuesday's games will be televised on TNT and can likewise be streamed on Max (previously HBO).
Wednesday’s games will be televised on ESPN and can be streamed via ESPN+ with a valid subscription login.
Friday’s Eastern Conference game will be hosted by TNT, while the Western Conference showdown will be aired on TNT.
Following the play-in tourney, the NBA Playoffs will start on Saturday, April 19.
