Why should the Commanders trade down from No. 29?

NFL draft analyst Jeremy Greene was presented with this scenario and gave a substantive reply that the Commanders fan base will find informative.

"I believe Washington is in the best spot to trade down of any team in this class," Greene said. "Be really honest with yourself, what does Washington need? I do look at Washington and say, 'It's going to get better.' They added Jonathan Jones; I like him a lot as a slot corner. I feel like that locks Sainristil into the outside position. He played a ton out there last season, and he was pretty good. I would like to add a safety, but I don't know that is going to work because this safety class is so bad."

More from Greene:

"I just don't want to reach. If I'm Washington, I'm trying to add better players every single time I come on the board. They added Laremy Tunsil. I evaluated Brandon Coleman as a guard. I've got to protect Jayden Daniels. So I traded down at 29 with the NY Jets to 42. Washington only has five picks, so I feel like you have to trade down."

" I want an offensive tackle so I can slide Coleman down inside to guard and use Allegretti as a rotational piece. I'm going Josh Conerly Jr. at 42 (Oregon OT, 6-4, 311). Because fact or fiction, having those two, Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly on the outside protecting Jayden Daniels, that gives me my bookends for his entire rookie deal. I have what I think is an elite left tackle in Laremy Tunsil. I've got what I think is an elite prospect in Josh Conerly."

Yes, he's never played right tackle, but I think he can. This kid was a running back six years ago. He has great feet, they had him in for a top 30 visit, and then you look at how mobile Jayden Daniels is. I look at my offensive line, and I slide Coleman inside to guard, and I say that is pretty good. That line is pretty good, which should allow me to run the ball. That should allow Jayden Daniels to do whatever he wants to do. And I still have picks to take care of the other positions I still want to take care of."

With their pick at No. 61, Greene has the Commanders selecting Iowa RB Kaleb Johnson. Greene says, "Johnson is built like an NFL running back and will be the head of the snake in the Commanders' running back rotation, saying Johnson will get those three yards needed better than Brian Robinson did last year."

Finally, the trade down from 29 to 42 brings the Jets' No. 73 pick to the Commanders. Here Greene has Washington selecting Ashton Gillotte (6-2.5, 264), an edge rusher from Louisville. "He is strong, he's an absolute warrior, motor-wise. Ashton Gillotte is a better pass rusher than Mykel Williams, and I'm not sure it's all that close."

The Commanders also hosted Gillotte on a top 30 visit.
