So, me and a group of my friends got into this discussion the other night while drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

What makes one film a better "guys movie" than another?

I agrued that a film should be rated on the 3B scale; those B's being Bullets, Boobs, and Blood. The more of any of these 3 elements in a movie, the more of a guys movie it is.

I thought I would solicit other opinions...I might just turn this into a Kumite!

Need to think of another B for the offbeat humor that we guys tend to find more funny than our female counterparts

The example that sticks in my mind of this is Supertroopers ....... went with a few buddies and a couple of our female friends to see this in the theaters .... no dates or anything like that, just hanging out and they were definitely comfortable with our sense of humor ....... they hated it and we were laughing up a storm

Looking around the theater, almost every guy was laughing and almost every female was miserable ..... I counted 5 couples that left halfway through the movie under the obvious women scorn

I think this lack of crossover appeal can help really cement a movie as a "guys" movie - throw in themes like sports (w/out the sappy love story), some crude humor, some explosions and some light fun and it gets even better

Probably best to identify and come to a consensus on movies where they are heavily slanted to one gender

I'm an assman so change Boobs to bootie and I agree. That could be a swing 'B' that can go either way based on the male preference...

Ok, so how about I change the 3 B's to:

Bullets (ie. general level of violence, this would include sword fights and fistfights)
Bodaciousness (ie. Boobs/Booty)
Boneheadness (crude/immature male-oriented humor)

In the City of Scottsdale, guy movies are not allowed to have women in them - too risky

Sure they are, they just require that chicks get a stunt-double.

Nah.. Keep it boobs. Ass as a whole isn't shown off like boobs in a guy movie. Plus Portland opinion just sucks :)

I preferred your original three. Adding the "Boneheadness" theme takes me out of the picture. I don't think that qualifies as a guy's movie at all. To me, that's a quality that probably does appeal to the male gender but it's pretty much restricted to an age group also.

Need a fourth B, since you don't have E's--BOOMS!!! I'd rather say explosions, but would that work? The Three B's and an E? I mean, a real guy's movie has to have some **** blow up, right?

Make it 4 Bs because one of the Bs is a Double.

Check that - 2 Bs and a Double D.

Well...my drinking buddies and I started with a list of around 200 movies that we had to whittle down to 128 (using our own, unique, voir dire process) to establish brackets. We then spent the last couple of months pitting these various guy's movies versus one another, using Facebook polling, to pare it down to a final four:

Conan the Barbarian (the original Schwarzenegger classic)
Blazing Saddles
Commando
The Dark Knight

That will be a fun guy's movie night indeed!

How is Dark Knight on that list but Die Hard isn't?

Fail

Everything was seeded in the brackets by random draw. Die Hard was a tough-luck loser to Conan in the 1st round. I tried to reintegrate it back into the mix later, along with a couple of other movies that went out before their time (IMHO), but some people thought I was violating the spirit of the tournament.

Yeah, sorry, but there are only two 'guy' movies on there: Conan and Commando. Blazing Saddles and TDK are great movies, no doubt, but there are just soooooooooooooo many better ones out there. Sounds like your friends aren't guys...er, guy's guys :D

That's painful to read. Is it too late to get new friends? I'm not sure I want to live on a planet where "guys" would choose Conan over Die Hard. The next time the Armageddon crew goes up, I'm hitching a ride to the nearest asteroid.

There are pitfalls to having 13 different opinions in something like this. As much as I love TDK, it's no guy's movie...nor is Braveheart for that matter.

What really drove me nuts was Tommy Boy. It made it to the elite eight for kripe's sake. Chris Farley=not funny. I was glad when everybody else finally came to their senses when it was matched up against Blazing Saddles.

I thought of running a similar Kumite here...you bozos game?
