Does anyone know what temperatures determine whether the roof and/or panels will be open or closed?

It seems to me like it's usually closed on any day game when its about 90 or above and then when its over about 103ish for a night game (for the high of that day not necessarily 103 at game time.)

For a night game, what is the temperature range that will cause the panels to be closed but roof to still be open?

Do they follow a set temperature that determines if its open or closed or is it just whoever is in charge's call at game time or what?

D-backsFAN: How do you decide if the roof will be open or closed during the games?

Hall:
It is not an easy decision, and on day games, half of the crowd is happy, while the other is uncomfortable. Typically, we will push the envelope to have it open at night. The sun, heat and glare on a day game is a different story. If it is under 100 degrees at night, we will mostly open it. For day games, if it is in the low- to mid-80s, we will likely open it. But there needs to be room to move people who are uncomfortable. This weekend is a perfect example -- may be in the upper 80s, but with big crowds, we may not be able to relocate, so it may remain closed.

Anyone know anything about the panels? What temperature range causes them to be closed but the roof still open?

Its closed way too damned often. Other teams w/ out roofs play in games with temperatures in the 90s all the time. If the temp is 100 or less at first pitch, it ought to be open. They can always close the roof and crank the AC a few hours before game time, and most of that cool air will sit in the stadium if they keep the panels closed.

The atmosphere there is probably a 7 out of 10 with the roof open but maybe a 3 out of 10 with it closed, I hate going to games w/ the roof closed.

Yeah it looks so much better with roof off and panels open. I guess when it's about 90-100 they leave the roof open but keep the panels closed for the reason you mentioned, it still stays cool.

Just don't sit in Sec 303 if it's a day game.

http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1727324&postcount=21

Yesterday was about 92 and the roof was open, which was great since it was a nice evening but in that section you get the sun in your face until about 6.30pm.

Ugh, yea, I sat in 303 too. Awful.

Probably today as well, unless it is a weak crowd (like mid 30,000's), then I'll move and get some better seats. Roof will be closed today, though obviously..

Found that out the hard way, was in sec 304 Saturday and literally had to move under the concourse until the sun went away because I didn't feel like getting fried. Luckily not much happened while I was gone lol.

They should have kept it closed Saturday... it was blazing hot up in that area where the sun was hitting and it was basically sold out so you couldn't move anywhere else :(

Situations like this is where I wish Chase Field had a cloth roof similar to that at University of Phoenix stadium that runs under the steel roof. For hot day games, you could open the steel roof, but leave the opaque cloth shut, thus allowing light to seep through, giving it an open, airy feeling, but still dramatically reducing the sun and heat.

In general Phoenix needs to do a better job (we ought to mimic our Middle Eastern desert city brethren) of shading ourselves with opaque shade sails. Every structure designed in Phoenix needs to take the desert into account, Venice is a city reclaimed from the sea, Phoenix needs to be a city reclaimed from the sun.

I cant believe how much complaining there is! if the roof is open wear a hat or something. Phoenix fans are the most fickle in the country and this is a great example. If you hate being out in the sun why do you live in the desert?

Oh, yeah...we hung out in the concourse until end of the 4th inning. Never knew that upper deck was so nicely decorated! Then on the way up to our seats, we figured row 33 was the very top and I said "oh look, 2 empty seats" around row 15 and that's where we landed! Thank goodness no one showed up to claim them.

Next time I'll come prepared with RayBans, SPF60 and a hat (oh, wait - there won't be a next time in THAT section for me!!)

Ummm, PHXSportsFan4 is from Indiana and was visting Phoenix over the weekend. Saturday's game was hotter than 99.9% of the days in Indana's history, so cut him some slack. The fact the the only thing he has been talking abuot for weeks was getting to see the D-Backs shows me just how much of a fan he is.

And although I think the roof should be open for most of the game with the exception of a 110 degree day game, I am not sure how being too hot is fickle. Please explain.

You knows who needs to shut up, the old grumpy guy at the end of our row on Saturday who told my fiance "sit down and watch the f'ing game" because she had to go the bathroom three because she is 7 month pregnant. She even waited to go in between inning to her dicomfort just to be nice.

I've experienced 105 here before so it wasn't a totally new experience but the main thing was just the sun. I quit wearing my sunscreen because we had lower level seats at the 4 previous games we went to and the sun wasn't shining at all because it was blocked by the tallness of the stadium I guess. I didn't realize that those seats in 304 would be so exposed. If I had wore my sunscreen I wouldn't have had any problem but I didn't feel like ending the trip with a sunburn because I usually burn pretty easily early in the warm months then It'll eventually turn into a tan once I get burned a 2 or 3 times.

One thing I noticed while in Phoenix is how the sun sits literally overhead of you. Here it sits at kindof an angle so it's not as bad.

As for the grumpy people, I counted 7 incidents in which an F-Bomb was dropped either on the street at a driver or in the stadium at someone who got up a lot. I don't know if it was just coincidence that we happened to witness that many angry people or if the sun just makes some people crazy or what but I always thought Phoenix was an easy going laid back type of place.

Then, of course, there are those of us who are prone to skin cancer so have to avoid direct sun whenever possible.

That's terrible. At the Dodger game I went to April 8th, the worst I had was some old guy behind me who kept telling me to sit down when I wanted to stand up and clap, or when we did the wave (Nash2Amare? was that you? lol)

But that's just sad.

Nah. lol

But I do say something like "F--- the wave" when douchebags in my section or sections over try to start that garbage. It's pointless and it sounds like 90% of the park doesn't give a .... about the game when we have trouble with that (good crowds) in the first place

"Will you little ***** sit the eff down, Christ sake, it's a baseball game, not an effing circus" - Grumpy old guy.

I don't really like the wave, but I don't really hate it. But unless it's a good crowd nobody seems to care unless they're drunk.

I heard people dropping F-Bombs at people in the games too (posted about it in the thread earlier), I don't know what's with some of the ppl, maybe the sun beating them down makes them crazy or something but I haven't seen that many unfriendly people in a 5 day span before. I would agree that the wave is dumb and pretty much says people don't even care about the game. I have never participated in a wave and never will. But if other people want to do it, whatever. I don't like it and it kinda ticks me off sometimes but I'm not going to start screaming at people over it. They are just trying to have fun like everyone else but I think it shows how much they really care about the game.

I didn't run into to many people cussing who weren't into the game. Most of the times you can tell who's into it and who's not, people who are into it (like us on here) aren't talking on their cellphones the entire game.

And as for cussing, there are usually some drunk fans who were cussing at the other team fans that showed up.

But then again, you should see Chase when the Cubbie retards come to town. They get drunk and **** talk the Dbacks in our own stadium! My Sister wanted to get tickets to when they come to Phoenix in July just to see me get into fights with the Cubs fans because we hate them so much.

Then they should just go to the park and play on the swings.

I can't stand douchebags who stand up in front of me "Everyone! The Wave! On 3...1...2...3!!!!!!"
Idiots.

Hey, I love doing the wave. But it looks kinda weird when it stops by the right field gap and picks up on the other side, LoL.

They opened the roof and the panels mid-game tonight. Does anyone ever recall them doing this? I LOVE it. If its too hot at game time, it still allows for most of the game to be enjoyed with the roof open. The roof was actually still opening while Webb was pitching, I was pretty sure there was a rule against that (i.e. I thought they had to take a 5 minute break of play in order to open the roof). Anyway, I hope they keep doing this for late afternoon games, and regular 7pm games that start hot, but cool off to comfortable temps.
