A very different version of the UIL soccer playoffs begins on Thursday.

As it has in other team sports, the UIL has divided each classification into Division I and Division II with no regional tournaments and one less round to win a state championship.

The move will double the number of state champions from two to four in both boys and girls soccer and some familiar foes are now in completely different playoff brackets.

In Corpus Christi, many of the usual suspects are in the playoffs again: the Gregory-Portland girls, Flour Bluff boys and girls, Veterans Memorial boys and girls, London boys and girls and Calallen girls are all playoff bound yet again.

But there are some teams that are back in the playoffs for the first time in a while. The Carroll boys clinched a spot for the first time since 2012, while the Gregory-Portland boys are playoff-bound for the first time since 2014.

What you need to know

The biggest offshoot of the split division format comes in Class 4A which is the catch-all division for all schools participating in soccer that are smaller than Class 5A enrollment.

In the Coastal Bend, London and Santa Gertrudis Academy have Class 3A enrollment and participate in 4A soccer and the split division allows them to compete against more similar-sized schools while separating the largest schools in the class into another playoff bracket.

Teams to watch

The Flour Bluff boys (19-3) made a historic run last season, advancing to the regional semifinals, the first Class 5A boys team to advance that far since Gregory-Portland in 2006.

The Hornets will try to follow up the run in the challenging Class 5A Division I bracket.

The District 29-4A champion London boys and girls (20-4) have each made trips to the regular trips to the regional semifinals and are each seeking to become the first school in the Coastal Bend to advance to the state semifinals since the Calallen girls accomplished the feat in 2021.

All four Corpus Christi area district champions completed undefeated runs through the district, including the Gregory-Portland girls (19-2) , who captured their eighth straight title.

The Wildcats will compete in a challenging Class 5A Division II bracket including McAllen Memorial, Cedar Park and Boerne.

Do not sleep on them

While London and Calallen girls have been the traditional teams to watch, District 29-4A as a whole has been successful in the girls Class 4A playoffs. The district has had two representatives reach the regional semifinals for four consecutive seasons and all four playoff teams have advanced to the third round in all of those runs.

With fewer teams from their own district to knock them out, Rockport-Fulton and Beeville could also figure in this year's Class 4A girls playoffs.
