Five matchups I’ll be keeping an eye on when the Cards and 49ers renew their NFC West rivalry:

Joe Staley, LT, #74 vs Chandler Jones, OLB, #55 Staley isn’t the elite player he once was, but if he is able to handle Chandler Jones alone, especially in the run game, the 49er offense could be productive.

Pierre Garcon, WR, #15 vs Justin Bethel, CB, #28 Anticipate a lot of “sides” coverage and zones against a pedestrian wide receiver corps. But in third and long, this is a matchup of veteran savvy and physical ability.

Solomon Thomas, DE, #94 vs Jared Veldheer, RT, #68 The veteran right tackle has a chance to get his season back on track against the rookie first-rounder still figuring out the NFL game.

Eric Reed, S, #35 vs Larry Fitzgerald, WR, #11 The ageless wonder is coming off his best game in years. Eric Reid is talented and improving. If he can limit Fitzgerald on his own, he’ll free up a variety of options for the defense.

Elvis Dumervil, DE, #58 vs D.J. Humphries, LT, #74 Dumervil’s snaps have been limited so far this season, but he could make a big impact if Humphries is physically limited or hasn’t maintained his technique during his rest.

Prediction: San Francisco 49ers 17, Arizona Cardinals 16

That last match up has me intrigued.

Though I like Humphries as a person (just his attitude), that doesn't mean the kid has A LOT to prove.

If he is the future of this offensive line, he has to take command out there. The veterans are either hurt, or they have one foot out the door. It doesn't even need to be said that he has to step up his game and his leadership role.

If he is going to talk as much as he does, it is time he puts that to good use.

Hey what about Robert Nkemdiche vs a SF Oline player. Never mind I don't think the NFL allows players from the other team to sit on the opponents bench.

You really think Garcon will be covered by Bethel, not Peterson?? And Peterson will be on...?

I enjoy your What 2 Watch 4 writeups, but just an observation: they seem to be written from the opponent's perspective, like something you'd post on their board.

E.g. your matchups list the opposing player first, and seem to address the issue of how the opposing player will handle his Cardinal counterpart, rather than how each Cardinal will fare against the corresponding opponent (particularly Staley, Reed, and Dumervil this week).

Maybe this is how you intended it, as a change of pace from what we usually see, but it strikes me as odd & I'd personally prefer it the other way.

...dave

P.S. Your models wearing the other team's gear are still very much appreciated! A little variety is always nice! :-D

I have no idea who'll win. Nearly every team is unprdictable from game to game (Bettors - Hold onto your money).

What to Watch for:

Arizona Cardinald Psyche Vs Forty Niners Motivation.

Arizona plays like a losing team. On the rare occasion they build some momentum the slightest mis step can cause the entire team to unravel . San Francisco on the other hand plays hard every down. Knowing that most weeks they are mismatched and under talented their coaching staff has them fully prepared and believing in the mantra "on any given Sunday" The Arizona cardinals really need to get their collective heads in order and in the game if they want even a small shot at the playoffs this season. Fans near the training facility should be on the alert for a loud popping sound as it may indicate the Redbirds have finally extracted their craniums.

Well, I assume that most people on here already know the Cardinals and their strengths and weaknesses.
