How can one of the most hilarious men on the planet make so many terrible movies?

Sure, money is going to mean that he's going to do a lot of movies, but why does that mean they're all gonna suck? One would think he could churn out at least one good film a decade, but when was the last time he was in anything watchable?

He has to make the money to pay all the comedians whose jokes he steals on a regular basis. Dude has a separate checkbook he keeps just to pay comedians. There are some who won't even take a stage if Williams' is in the crowd.

If his stage presence and delivery weren't so good, he'd be another Carlos Mencia.

Good Will Hunting, was in the last decade 1997 and he won an Oscar for it. Here are few other movies he's been in that haven't been bad, IMO.

Man Of The Year
The Night Listener
The Big White
Insomnia
One Hour Photo
AI
Jakob The Liar

His others I'll agree were stink bombs...these I've mentioned???? Well, they might not all be on the Good Will Hunting level, but they aren't bad movies...or, he wasn't bad in them.

Robin Williams is my favorite comedian on the planet. I don't count most of his movies recently, as they have been geared towards kids.

Masterphomeg, you forget Good Morning Vietnam, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Patch Adams as movies he was good at/in.

I think he was focusing on the last decade. Patch Adams is within that span. So is Death to Smoochy !!

He was also "in" Robots and Happy Feet. Night at the Museum...

But since they are so good, he isn't Carlos Mencia. Mencia ever even approach the level of Mork? Don't think so. :)

Williams was also excellent on the t.v. show, Homicide.

Death to Smoochy was amazing. And he was excellent in Insomnia and One Hour Photo as well.

Yeah, and if Quan wasn't such a beast he'd be Kevin Kasper.

Nobody likes sour grapes. Regardless of these critics, RW is a true original.

Regardless of these critics, RW is a good actor but a fraud of a comedian.

FTFY. :D

I wouldn't have a problem with Williams if he told the public his standup material is about 10 percent original, 90 percent bought and paid for. Like I said, his timing and delivery is still A++.

I think he's a better actor than comedian, but his comedy timing is what makes him a good actor.

There's a fine line between stealing material and parallel ideas. And there is a tendency for comics to be criticized within their community once they find success. It's usually the comics that "make it" that are the thieves.

Who has accused RW of stealing material?

He's always been known as a comic who could show up without any material and use people in the crowd (ugly shirt, bad haircut, odd couple, etc) to get things rolling and put on a 2 hour show.

He wrote a check not that long ago to Jackie Mason, who was going to sue HBO's pants off for RW's televised special.

I suppose I could sit here and name off all the comedians that have accused Williams of stealing material, but I don't need to. Billy Crystal confirmed it not that long ago saying Williams has "written many checks" to make the problem go away.

Williams is still a very funny guy, and he's not resented like Carlos Mencia because Carlos is in abject denial about what he does. That, and the fact that Mencia telling someone else's joke is always less funny than the original. I think what used to upset comics the most is Williams always gets more laughs than they do with the same material.

Billy Crystal is one of Robin Williams' closest friends in the comedy business, if he actually did say that, I find it really hard to believe that he was being serious.

There is so much hate in the world nowadays, not only with sports, but with everything else. It sucks that the great ad-lib comedian ever has to be subjected to all this. Nobody is saying he makes great project choices, but to write him off as a guy who steals material is ridiculous. No offense, of course, Gad.
