When We Were Kings is a 1996 documentary film directed by Leon Gast about the famous Rumble in the Jungle heavyweight championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman held in (what was then called) Zaïre (now called the DR Congo, all references are to Zaire) on October 30, 1974. It highlights the legendary boxer's trademark wit and charisma, as well as his superb ring generalship during the fight itself. The title refers to the time when Black people were kings and queens in Africa.

Just watched this. What a fantastic documentary, probably the best I have seen. Ali puts today's athletes to shame.

There have been tons of Ali films made... This is BY FAR the best, most well done and authentic illustration of one of the truly greatest athletes in the history of professional sports.

I wish there were better boxing personalities/storylines fighting today. I just finished that Hagler/Leonard book and have read Joe Louis and some other old-time fighter biographies and I love the gamesmanship and backstories to boxing.

I feel the same way Jason. I have been on a boxing kick of sorts, watching Raging Bull, this film, reading a lot about Ali and watching a few fights on ESPN.

I wish boxing was bigger than it is today. Kind of sad really.

There is a decent fight Saturday November 8 between Roy Jones and Joe Calzaghe (click). Calzaghe is a Welshman, who is 45-0 with 32 KOs last beat Bernard Hopkins for Hopkins Ring Light-heavyweight title.

The Jones-Calzaghe fight should be a good one... Calzaghe is younger, quicker and of course, unbeaten... Jones is a freak though... If he is properly prepared, he could easily hand Calzaghe his first loss. And if he does, it sets up a potentially tremendous rematch of their 1993 battle with Hopkins. Jones won that fight by decision, reportedly with a broken hand... somehow, the two have never been able to put together a rematch since then, however, the stars seem to be lining up just right to finally make it happen. And even though Hopkins is 43 and Jones is 39, the fight would be a huge draw... These two have defied conventional wisdom and have shown that at their relative advanced ages, they can still bring it.. Hopkins dismantling Kelly Pavlik last week was an amazing performance. Some say the best performance of an over 40 boxer in the history of the sport!

Interesting, I'll have to check this out. I love reading about Ali.

I probably would have been a bigger boxing fan growing up if the best fights were on regular tv.

Yeah, that was most unexpected! :)

I'm not a Hopkins fan at all... think he's been one of the more boring and frustrating fighters to watch for years now...
However, against Pavlik, he was simply amazing... He beat the crap out of a kid who is 17 years younger! A kid who twice beat the crap out of someone (Jermain Taylor), who twice beat Hopkins! One time knocking Taylor out cold!!

Just an incredible performance by Hopkins... I really don't think he can muster that sort of performance again and so, should Jones get by Calzaghe, I think Jones would beat Hopkins again... Hope we get the chance to see that fight...

Recently watched it. Awesome show. "I'm so bad I make medicine sick!" It must have been quite an experience to interview him.

You know, I bet I would have been a huge fan of boxing if they would have created something like the NCAA basketball tournament. Take out all the politics and just let them earn their way to a title in the ring.

Glad you enjoyed it. I recently watched the TNT movie Monday Night Mayhem, which stars John Turturro as Howard Cosell. The whole Ali/Cosell thing is fascinating. Talk about two larger-than-life characters!
