For the next two weeks, 64 teams will look to defy — or prove — their seedings in more than a dozen U.S. cities, culminating in a national championship showdown on April 6 in Tampa, Fla.To get there, teams will pass through Los Angeles, Baton Rouge, La., Chapel Hill, N.C. and Fort Worth, Texas, to name just a few sites. While we know where the schools are going to play, where does each team hail from?
mapped out the entire women’s March Madness field and the distance these teams must travel for Round 1. Distances were calculated using the shortest driving route between each school and the host city via Google Maps.
The top four seeds in each of the four brackets host games in the first and second rounds. Neutral-site games start during the Sweet 16 and will be held in Spokane, Wash., and Birmingham, Ala. The final two teams left standing will meet in Florida for the championship.
Spoiler: Richmond, Oregon and Oregon State have some of the farthest ways to go physically, traveling more than 2,600 miles each for Round 1. They might have an easier time flying through the bracket. It is March, after all. Expect the unexpected.
Spokane 1
No. 8 Richmond has the farthest first-round jaunt in this region, having to travel 2,611 miles to Los Angeles for its game against Georgia Tech. To be fair, however, the Yellow Jackets have a pretty long trip themselves — 2,178 miles. No. 6 Florida State has the easiest journey in this region, with a 441-mile trek west to Baton Rouge, La.

The committee was not kind to the schools from Oregon, sending the University of Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers across the country for games in North Carolina. The Ducks have the longest trip in the entire tournament — 2,863 miles to Durham, where they’ll face Vanderbilt. The Beavers go almost as far — 2,854 miles to Chapel Hill, where they’ll try to keep their surprising run going against the host Tar Heels.

The Bobcats of Montana State, meanwhile, have the longest first-round journey in this region, a 1,722-mile trip to Columbus, Ohio. Even worse, they have to face the Buckeyes on their home court.
