They are about to hand out about $75 million bucks in new contracts to 2 players (Glaus and Ortiz) and they have all the debt and defered payments. Where is this cash flow coming from?

And they're talking about adding Royce Clayton, Shawn Estes or Matt Clement, and two OFs. Not to mention the Johnson contract extension they want to sign him to. I honestly I have no clue, but Selig is enforcing the debt rules so accounting must be telling him and us that we have money.

I read some where a while back that the D'backs were asking the front office to forgive a debt of like $75-80 million. I believe this was still from their franchise fee (someone can correct me because I am just speculating that is what it is). Maybe this has finally occured??

Check this out from ESPN.com:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=1943079

What no one can figure out is where the Diamondbacks, who have begged MLB to forgive their $80 million debt and owe $55 million in deferrals this season because they never funded the deferred contracts, are getting the cash. Russ Ortiz is getting done at close to $34 million for four years, as is Royce Clayton. And the solution White Sox GM Ken Williams figured out -- Javier Vazquez to Chicago, Paul Konerko and Jon Garland to Arizona, Randy Johnson to New York -- has apparently fallen apart, because Williams has yet to hear back.

Another way to look at it is that maybe they got a deal worked out with randy johnson and are moving after free agents anticpating the financial flexibility...

Quick list of some the contracts that are no longer on the books from Opening Day 2004:
Sexson
Mantei
Finley
Dessens
Colbrunn
Alomar
Mayne
Plus all of those guys like Sparks and Reynolds

Thats well over $30 million off of last year's Opening Day payroll. I would suppose they are just redistributing that $30 million since they have said that this years payroll will be similar to last years (give or take).

Gammons is a moron. Trading for Garland and Konerko will only save us about $4 million in salaries. Trade Johnson for solid players who are making very little (Aaron Rowand, Chone Figgins, Casey Kotchman, Damaso Marte, Javier Vazquez with cash, Edwin Jackson, Jayson Werth, etc) and use extra money to either pay off these debts which have miraculously disappeared or put in somehwere else on the team.

On a conspiracy theory note, maybe MLB let us slide on the $80 million we owe them if we promised to trade RJ to the Yanks ensuring higher ratings through the 2005 season.

Its amazing that our franchise fee was originally $130 mil...maybe the front office agreed to defer that? :D

Not sure about the timing, but we are getting it now--all of $5 million a year.

On ESPN (they were talking about RJ rumors and where the Dbacks got the money) they said that Kendrik has said that he has $250 million of cap room.... I wish I could make money appear like that.

They are sucking up that money faster than my wife with her Visa. Maybe they paid off that debt and paid into the deferred payments

Some guy in my office (Red Sox fan) was trying to tell me that a "hidden" part of the Schilling deal was Boston picked up his defered salary. Any truth to that? I doubt it....

Can such a thing be hidden? Managers around the league are stumped on how the d-backs got a new credit line....

Anyone listening to the Russ Ortiz interview on 910 right now? Ortiz sounds very out of it. Almost as bad as Marion as a rookie on Rome. Well not that bad.

Well, couple thoughts - maybe Moorad went ahead and threw in his $30-40 Million, assuming he'll be approved as investor. After all, he won a gigantohumongous lawsuit a year or so back - maybe it's getting paid. Maybe Ken Kendricks decided that if Moreno and George can fund things out of their own pockets, so can he - I believe he and Dale whatever his name is are worth a ton of money, right? Or maybe :barf: still has not a shred of foresight, and still can't live within a budget.

btw - how is this different from what JC normally did??
