He is putting up some mighty good stats this month, and the Hawks are actually winning some games. About 25 points, 5 boards, 6 assists on 46% shooting in the last 5 games. 30 pts, 9 assists, 0 turnovers, 5 3-balls against Denver today. We've had countless 'look at JJ's bad stats today' threads, and someone even saying Eddie House more than makes up for him - how about a bit of kudos now that he is playing like a franchise player?

He does, more so when you factor in who we got back for Joe. A guy called Boris Diaw who is a better rebounder, passer and defender than Joe Johnson.

Joe is playing well but really like It matters. He is gone.

I don't think anybody ever questioned the talent Joe has. He is a very talented basketball player. Its just too bad his skills will be wasted doing whatever they do down there in Atlanta.

yeah he is improving but i really don't think he is worth the money that the hawks are paying him. he should be playing like lebron or mj to make what he does.

I totally agree, talented player just has to get used to losing 60 games every year. At least he will get an early jump on summer vacation every year.

It's easier to put up huge stats on a losing team than in the framework of a winning team. If they were the same place in the standings that the Suns are right now, I'd give him kudos. If he puts up huge stats and they remain a lottery team, what good is having a $70 million guy whose team isn't a winning team? Not to mention he cost two first round picks for your franchise... :thud:

Why can't we all get over it already and call the deal a win-win-win for all three parties involved? :D

i like how boris is rated higher on that list than JJ

lol

seriously, JJ is the man. i still have mad respect for his game. he's even been trying to force the issue more to get to the foul line. he needed to get out of here to become the best player he could be. This would never have been his team. Atlanta right now, for better or worse, is his team, and i respect a guy that wants that.

that being said, i don't really care anymore. by some miracle that trade was not lopsided, and we're doing alright.

i will continue to be happy to see JJ succeed...and equally happy to see JJ fail :)

Joe and his team still sucks...yippee, you won 4 games...and the Spurs lost to the Hawks and the Hornets...just another day in the life of th NBA, no big deal...bottom line is that Joe and his team will be going fishin during the post season for many years to come...no playoffs for you Joey Boy!

Congrats on your meaningless win tonight.

I like how 3 current Suns are ranked ahead of JJ- Nash, Marion, and Diaw. We all know it should be four- Amare  . Nothin like coming close to having a 5th man getting paid $70 mill. "Keep me on the bench Coach, I don't want to get booed anymore." WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

my gripe wasnt about how much he got paid or what he contributes. i just hate the guy and always will. we've gone over this **** too much, and we all know how everyone feels. there will always be hater of JJ on this board, but i think the majority of us have gotten past the PURE HATE of the guy.

i dont care how well he does. he could average 30, 10, 10 and i would still hate him. he could average 15, 5, 5 and i'd hate him just as much.

I am willing to concede that, RIGHT NOW, JJ is a better player than Boris. But JJ a "franchise player", no way, not on a winning team. JJ will never be "the man" on a winning team, that takes more talent than he has. Compare him with: Wade, Allen, Lebron, Kobe, AI, KG, TD, Dirk, TMAC, and even Melo, and JJ just comes up short. He is a very good 2 guard who has every tool, except taking the ball all the way to the rim and finishing, while defended (everybody mentioned above has that skill, except Dirk). A franchise player is a superstar like Nash or Amare or the guys above. The fact that we would have had to pay superstar money for a new star (1 year of stardom at 17ppg) means JJ had to go. As we all see now, depth is critical in the NBA. Just look how the suns struggle with a thin bench, and remember the playoffs last year. Oh yeah, and the Hornets beat the shorthanded spurs, and the Hawks beat Denver(7guys available, no martin or camby) in OT. Just the loss of one player, James Jones, had a huge impact on the suns. Remember the spurs series last year in the 4th quarter when there was no energy for 'D', and you'll know why the signing of JJ instead of 3-4 bench players(Diaw, Jones, House) was a looser.

Who is this Joe Johnson you are talking about? And is this "Atlanta Hawks" a professional Basketball team? I seem to recall years ago a player that had mad game, Domonique Wilkins, playing for the Hawks - but I believe they shut that franchise down once he stopped playing for them... perhaps I am wrong...

Last time I checked, Hawks is still a 6-17 LOSING team. I am not too sure what's the great thing about JJ yet.

Oh.. OT: I can't believe New York is 6-17 as well!! Holy... how come I haven't seen to many Larry Brown bashing threads? lol I mean even the Lakers have picked up their game!!!

People were not hating on Joe because he is a bad player rtaher because he ditched the team that ivested so much in him to make him the best player he can be. We all know that JJ is a good player but not the MAX type player - it don't matter what he is averaging he will never be up there.

While I agree that JJ has never shown the leadership and "taking a game over" abilities that I consider requisite to becoming a superstar/max player, to say that he will absolutely never end up there is probably premature. This week he has elevated his game into a whole new level and led his bumbling mess of a team to 4 wins out of there last 5, with about three of those wins coming over quality opponents, including the Spurs, the Cavs, and Memphis. He won player of the week honors for the East this week while posting numbers of 25-7-6.3 - pretty much the best overall numbers in the league during that period. More importantly, it has been his leadership this week that has resulted in the wins, and he has executed during crunch time to pull out a couple of the closer wins.

Now that is admittedly a very small sample size, and it is pretty unlikely that he will produce at that level on a consistent basis, and even more unlikely that the Hawks will continue to win (in fact, I hope they don't, because we have draft picks waiting on that). But the fact is, that, at least for one week, JJ has played like a superstar/max player. He has shown he has the ability to perform at that high of a level, so to say that he will never become that kind of player is probably premature.

The biggest shock to me is if he ever became a true leader. His personality just doesn't seem fit for that. But if Tim Duncan wasn't so immensely talented and successful, would he be viewed as a leader?

I think that you seriously over rate what happened this past week for the hawks. First, Atlanta beat the spurs, cleveland, the knicks, and Denver(who only suited up 7 players with both camby and Martin out). They did not play Memphis. That denver team that night, without camby and Martin, was probably even worse than the knicks who are 6-17 and were in the process of losing 6 straight games to anybody and everybody. Also, during Joe's shining week, cleveland was in the process of losing 8(atlanta was the 7th) of ten games when they met the hawks. Cleveland has the worst FG% against in the NBA, the worst defense in the league. So really, the only strong challenge was against San Antonio, who was playing in the fourth game in six nights, while atlanta was fresh off a three day rest in the schedule. I'm not really sure that Joe played against any fresh quality opponent during this time period. That being said, the Hawks have improved enough to win such games: against opponents on losing streaks, and injured and fatigued teams. The idea that these games somehow proved joe can be a superstar is ridiculous. Against undermanned (Denver), fatigued(spurs) teams, the worst defensive team in the NBA(cavs), and the knicks, he probably didnt see too much defense.

Superstardom can only be proved by consistent performance against quality offense and defense. The NBA schedule pretty much provides for parity with the use of fatigue and injury. Joe may actually have to play in the playoffs to prove himself.

Honestly, the only reason I care about the Atlanta Hawks is because we get one of their draft picks.

We aren't getting it this year. I believe we get either Boston's or the Lakers' draft pick this year (whichever one is lower in the first round).
