Diamondback Jay
Psalms 23:1
With Spring Training getting closer by the week, one of the biggest (both in name and physical stature) free agents heading into the post-season surprisingly remains unsigned.
It's obvious this name, Prince Fielder, will have a new home in 2012, question however at this point is where?
Let's throw out the teams that MAY be in the running:
Washington
- The Nats slowly and steadily have become a big time player when it comes to spending money and building a competitive team. Keep in mind, last year they shilled out an astronomical contract to Jayson Werth and even this off-season they traded four pretty good prospects to land Gio Gonzalez.
Signing Fielder doesn't quite seem as far fetched these days. With apologies to Michael Morse, who had a very nice 2011, and Adam LaRoche, the acquisiton of Fielder would bring a huge upgrade at 1st; while giving the Nats a legit annual 40+ home run threat and may push them over the top as the team to beat in the NL.
Texas
- The Rangers have money to spend with the new regional TV deal. They've represented the AL in the World Series each of the last two seasons and came an eyelash away TWICE from winning it this year. They also have a gaping hole at 1st (sorry to Mitch Moreland, but when your 1B is hitting 9th in the lineup, you need an upgrade). On top of things, you throw Fielder into the same lineup with Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz and you've got a modern Murderer's Row.
Oh and have I yet to mention, their divisional rival Angels signed Albert Pujols this post-season?
I know some think their "splash" was winning the bidding war to talk to Yu Darvish. I personally don't buy that and think the Rangers are trying to one up, or come close to matching the two-in-a-row splash the Angels made when they signed Pujols and CJ Wilson on the same day.
Miami
- Hey, why not? Suddenly, this new stadium has turned Jeff Loria into George Steinbrenner II. With the newfound money, the team already free spending on Jose Reyes and Mark Buherle and a well documented $270+ million dollar offer to Albert Pujols that the slugger turned down; what's stopping them from throwing a big wad of cash at Fielder?
Chicago Cubs
- He's been linked to the Cubs almost from the start. After acquiring Anthony Rizzo however, they may have cooled a bit in their pursuit. Still, he certainly could be the salvation Cubs fans seek. Never know.
St. Louis
- Hey why not? Anyone HONESTLY think their replacement for Pujols plan stops at Carlos Beltran? Lord knows, they need a 1B now too..
What's your thoughts? Where do you see him winding up?
