Can the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team still wind up in a postseason tournament? Here's what to know about the Panthers.
The Panthers, which lost to Oakland in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament, obviously won't be going to the NCAA tournament. The National Invitation Tournament (NIT), a 32-team tournament, won't be inviting the Panthers, either. That tournament chooses 16 "exempt" teams (top teams not selected to the NCAA from the top-12 conferences based on Ken Pomeroy rating, plus two bids each from the top ACC and SEC schools that didn't get into the NCAA Tournament).
The tournament then invites regular-season conference champions that didn't earn an NCAA bid, as long as that team has an average of 125 or better across a number of rankings systems (BPI, KPI, NET, KenPom, SOR, Torvik and WAB rankings).
UWM does not fit those stipulations. That leaves the College Basketball Invitational, a 16-team invite in Daytona Beach that is already choosing teams. Then, there's the College Basketball Crown, a new 16-team tournament taking place in Las Vegas.
There's also a question of whether Milwaukee would choose to participate in a postseason tournament, even if asked. The program already has lost its top two scorers, Themus Fulks and Jamichael Stillwell to the transfer portal, so it would be short-handed. We would conceivably know the full lineup for all of these tournaments shortly after Selection Sunday ceremonies complete Sunday.
