BATTLE CREEK - Some individuals saw success at states at Ford Field. A couple teams made a run at a state title at Wings Stadium. The 2024-25 high school wrestling season had a lot of highlights.

To celebrate, the Battle Creek Enquirer is joining with area coaches to name an All-Area Wrestling Team, featuring the top performers from the schools in the Enquirer readership area.

The Battle Creek Enquirer 2025 All-Area Wrestling Team, as well as annual awards, were chosen from a vote of area coaches.

After putting multiple wrestlers on the podium at the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Finals, the coach for the Union City Chargers has earned the Coach of the Year Award - Jason Counterman. Jordan Herman of Union City was named Assistant Coach of the Year.

Freshman of the Year: Uriah Joostberns - Climax-Scotts/Martin

Sophomore of the Year: Devan Garcia - Harper Creek

Junior of the Year: Haylen Buell - Climax-Scotts/Martin

Senior of the Year: Logan Gilbert - Climax-Scotts/Martin

The All-Area Wrestling Team is chosen by weight class:

106: Blayne Crance - Union City​


Blayne Crance helped Union City advance to the Division 4 state team tournament at Wings Stadium. Crance was an honorable mention all-area selection a year ago and went 38-14 as a sophomore taking fourth at regionals to qualify for the state meet as an individual.

Second Team: Cohen Renner, Harper Creek; Honorable Mention: Jacinto Lopez, CSM

113: Uriah Joostberns - Climax-Scotts/Martin​


Uriah Joostberns had a breakout freshman season and helped Climax-Scotts/Martin return to the Division 4 state team tournament, advancing to the state finals, finishing second in the state. Joostberns went 36-14, finished second in regionals and was fifth in the state.

Second Team: Carson Andrews, Harper Creek; Honorable Mention - Brock Glispy, Athens

120: Devan Garcia - Harper Creek​


After winning a state title as a freshman, Devan Garcia rolled into the state championships as an individual as the top seed in his weight class as a league, district and regional champ. Garcia finished runner-up in the state and 34-2 overall. The sophomore helped Harper Creek to a team district crown.

Second Team: Camren Brock - Harper Creek; Honorable Mention: Braylon Swank - Pennfield.

126: Logan Gilbert - Climax-Scotts/Martin​


A two-time state champ, Logan Gilbert finished third in the state as a senior after taking first at districts and regionals. Gilbert went 42-6 overall and helped the Climax-Scotts/Martin co-op team return to the Division 4 state team tournament and advance to the state finals, finishing second in the state.

Second Team: Mitchell Graham - Union City; Honorable Mention: Marshawn Miller - Pennfield.

132: Jackson Pennock - Harper Creek​


With a breakout sophomore season, Jackson Pennock was a key wrestler for Harper Creek as the Beavers won a team district title. Pennock also won an all-city title and an Interstate 8 Conference championship as he went 45-9 overall.

Second Team: Cole Reitz - CSM; Honorable Mention - Mason Hawthorne - Union City

138: Logan Mears - Union City​


Logan Mears had a big senior season as he finished third in the state with a 37-3 record overall, also taking a regional and a district crown. Mears, who was second-team all-area last year, helped Union City advance to the Division 4 state team tournament at Wings Stadium.

Second Team: Jayce Ritchie - CSM; Honorable Mention - Israel Waite - Harper Creek.

144: Haylen Buell - Climax-Scotts/Martin​


Haylen Buell helped the Climax-Scotts/Martin co-op team return to the Division 4 state team tournament and advance to the state finals, finishing second in the state. Buell went 54-5 during his junior season and finished second in the state after earning a regional and a district title.

Second Team: Aidan Taylor - Climax-Scotts/Martin; Honorable Mention - Filip Nowak - Maple Valley

150: Alex Boyer - Union City​


Alex Boyer helped Union City advance to the Division 4 state team tournament at Wings Stadium. Boyer had a big senior season and went 43-5 and finished fifth in the state after taking a regional and a district crown.

Second Team: Van Wirtz - Olivet; Honorable Mention - Trevor White - Lakeview

157: Montana Connell - Union City​


Montana Connell was a key part of the Union City lineup as a senior as he helped Union City advance to the Division 4 state team tournament at Wings Stadium. Connell took fourth in the regionals to advance to the state meet and finished 23-7 overall.

Second Team: Jackson Bagwell - CSM; Honorable Mention: Gavin Rice - Harper Creek

165: Boston Byers - Bellevue​


Boston Byers took second at regionals and was a standout for a young Bellevue team. Byers was 29-8 overall as a senior.

Second Team: Joshua Shroll - Battle Creek Central; Honorable Mention: Leo Ott - Harper Creek

175: Julian Landenberger - Harper Creek​


With a breakout senior season, Julian Landenberger was a key wrestler for Harper Creek as the Beavers won a team district title. Landenberger also won an all-city title and took second at the Interstate 8 Conference meet as he went 28-13 overall.

Second Team: John Olmsted - Union City; Honorable Mention: Connor Toburen - Olivet

190: Ben Kelenske - Olivet​


Ben Kelenske took third in districts and third in regionals to advance to the state meet and was a standout for the Eagles all season as a senior with a 49-7 record.

Second Team: Aidan Babick - Pennfield; Honorable Mention - Josh Boddy - Harper Creek

215: Sean Johnson - Harper Creek​


Sean Johnson broke into the lineup as a freshman and helped Harper Creek won a district team title. Johnson was an all-city champ and took second at the Interstate 8 Conference meet. He took third in the districts and finished 42-10 overall.

Second Team: Sam Bleeker - CSM; Honorable Mention: Joe LaSalle - Olivet

285: Harland Begg - Marshall​


Harland Begg was impressive during his sophomore season as he took second at the Interstate 8 Conference meet and was second in regionals. Begg went on to take third in the state and finish 38-6 overall.

Freshman of the Year: Aubreonna Armstrong, Harper Creek

Sophomore of the Year: Kylee Malloy, Olivet

Junior of the Year: Alexandria Stiltner, Harper Creek

Senior of the Year: Brianna Preston, Olivet

Head Coach of the Year: Elizabeth Neal, Harper Creek; Assistant Coach of the Year: Cliff Malloy, Olivet

100: Elayna Johns - Olivet​


Elayna Johns took third in regionals and advanced to the state meet. The junior finished 30-16 overall.

Second Team: Jenna Carr - Olivet

105: Abigail Judy - Marshall​


Abigail Judy took second at regionals and advanced to the state meet. The junior was 8-3 overall.

Second Team: Ashley Carr - Olivet

110: Aubreonna Armstrong - Harper Creek​


Aubreonna Armstrong had a breakout freshman season and was 12-10 overall.

Second Team: Ariel Crawley - Bellevue

115: Zionah Gardner - Homer​


Zionah Gardner was a regional champ and finished third in the state and was 13-1 overall as a senior.

Alexandra Stiltner was a regional champ and finished third in the state and was 32-2 as a junior.

125: Harmony Pennock - Bellevue​


Harmony Pennock had a standout freshman season and was 20-9 overall.

Second Team: Riley Flanders - Olivet

130: Kayla Miller - Harper Creek​


Kayla Miller is part of a growing girls program at Harper Creek and was 10-9 as a sophomore.

Second Team: Krysten Stowe - Homer

135: Ryann Goodrich - Bellevue​


Ryann Goodrich was 9-7 as a junior for Bellevue.

140: Kylee Malloy - Olivet​


Kylee Malloy finished second in regionals and advanced to the state meet and finished fifth in the state with a 45-9 overall record as a sophomore.

Second Team: Akira Shepherd - Battle Creek Central

145: Ryann Rippinger - Harper Creek​


Ryann Rippinger is part of a growing girls program at Harper Creek and was 12-15 as a junior.

Second Team: Alexis Thomas - Galesburg-Augusta

155: Blair Yurisich - Harper Creek​


Blair Yurisich was 11-13 as a sophomore for Harper Creek.

170: Alivia Endsley - Bellevue​


Alivia Endsley was two-sport standout in the winter, playing basketball and wrestling. Endsley was 11-10 as a senior for Bellevue

Second Team: Hannah LaFay - Olivet

190: Autum Lynd - Bellevue​


Autum Lynd was 15-11 as a senior for Bellevue

Second Team: Caitlyn Valadez - Galesburg-Augusta

235: Brianna Preston - Olivet​


Brianna Preston finished her senior year with a 22-13 record.
