Mookie Cook is on the move.
The former five-star forward and McDonald’s All-American on the Oregon men’s basketball team announced Tuesday he will be entering the transfer portal and leaving the Ducks.
The 6-foot-6 sophomore from Portland was a high-profile recruit when he arrived for the 2023-24 season but an injury limited him to five games as a freshman and this past season he was buried on the depth chart and averaged 4.3 minutes and 1.2 points in 24 games.
Cook applied for, and should receive, a redshirt waiver for the 2023-24 season, leaving him with three seasons of eligibility at his next stop.
The Ducks will certainly be in the market for some help at forward this offseason.
Along with Cook, Oregon is losing starter Brandon Angel and reserve Supreme Cook.
Kwame Evans Jr., who was part of the recruiting class that brought in Mookie Cook and point guard Jackson Shelstad, was a steady reserve this season and had six points and 10 rebounds in the NCAA Tournament loss to Arizona on Sunday.
But the 6-10 sophomore could be pondering a professional career. The same holds true for Shelstad and center Nate Bittle, who has a fifth season available to him if he wants it.
Both Shelstad and Bittle said Sunday that they were enrolled in spring term at Oregon.
Oregon coach Dana Altman made it clear on Sunday that he wants everyone back, as long as they want to be in Eugene.
“I want our guys to be happy,” Altman said. “I hope they can be happy at the University of Oregon. … I hope and pray that the guys want to stay, because I, like I said, I want them to stay. Everybody that can come back, I want them to come back.”
