Whisenhunt: Message to Lutui, doubters
By Mike Sando
Convenience trumps accuracy when it comes to NFL head coaches finding ways to motivate their players. There's been a general feeling this offseason that the San Francisco 49ers are in position to overtake the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West, with long-retired 49ers running back Roger Craig even saying his old team might "annihilate" the rest of the division.

Craig hasn't played for the 49ers since 1990, but the term "annihilate" came up this week when XTRA910 radio in Phoenix asked Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt about those pro-49ers perceptions. What does Whisenhunt think about that type of talk?

"It's really hard for me to say a lot because they beat us twice last year," Whisenhunt told XTRA. "It's a very frustrating thing because, you know, we didn't play well in either of those games -- not well enough. That is great. They can talk. I welcome the challenge. This is our fourth year together as a group and nobody has given us a chance, to be perfectly honest, in any one of those years. There has been a lot of talk about maybe this is the Cardinals' year when we first got here, but nobody really said they are ever going to win the division. That is not any different. I am OK with that because I like the way our team reacts to that situation."

The Cardinals were the most popular choice to win the division last season, for sure. No one associated with the current 49ers team has, to my knowledge, said the 49ers would "annihilate" the Cardinals in 2010. There's been some chatter between Darnell Dockett and Vernon Davis, but few bold proclamations from others. None of that matters, of course. The underdog angle is there and it's convenient. Any good coach would seize it.

Also in this interview, Whisenhunt expressed respect for Dockett, reiterated his confidence in Matt Leinart and said he wants Deuce Lutui to be in the "lower 340s" weight-wise, same as he was last season. Lutui recently reported to the team at 396 pounds and Whisenhunt was not happy.

"When Deuce came in and signed his contract, that was one of the things we talked about," Whisenhunt told XTRA910. "You guys know me pretty well and I have very little tolerance for that. Because, listen, this offseason, we had our guys in there working about as hard as I have ever been around. They are focused because everybody said we don't have a chance, we lost all these players and we can't do it. Our guys have really taken that challenge and worked hard. And it's difficult when you have guys in there busting their tails and one of the players isn't in there and then when he comes in and signs his contract, he's pretty heavy. That is frustrating. The onus is on Deuce."

Lutui is not the first guy that has ever been called out by Wiz. Matt has been, Branch has been, and some others that just are not coming to mind right now. Wiz is a really good motivator IMO he knows what guys respond to public call outs, which ones respond to behind closed doors calls out, and so on.

I think with the linemen we signed this off season Deuce has his work cut out for him. And coming in at almost 400 pounds made it much harder on himself. He may be a backup at best this year if he doesn't work his butt off, literally....

sadly, i don't either...there is no benefit of the doubt stuff here....it will be near impossible for him to get down to where he has to be in time. how a person looking for a big pay day goes on a super size me diet...kw is very much like tony la russa as he knows what to say and how to say it...

I'm pretty sure I remember supposed issues with him and Big Ben, not that they were true I never saw it confirmed.

Also, I think by saying "the onus is on Deuce" he basically was saying "shape up or ship out."

If he finishes preseason in the 350s, he'll probably make it still in the doghouse, higher than that I can see him getting cut. Lower than that and I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the starting job back. Whiz is just trying to make it clear to Deuce that he has to earn his job it's not a privilege IMO. It's up to him what happens from here on out.

Did Whis inherit or draft Lutui? It seems to me that he has always been more of a mental error guy than not. Maybe the writing's on the wall and he has just given up?

Whiz hasn't given up on Deuce, IMO, because if he had he just would not have mentioned him. He's sending a message that it's going to be pretty hard for him to make the team unless he can get his weight down. And I'm not sure how healthy it is to lose that much weight in a relatively short period of time. I hope he can do it.

Denny Green did, same yr as Leinart. I remember Deuce being about as solid a guard prospect as you could think of, some even rated him as highly as a first rounder.

Is it possible that Deuce has his eye on a career as a Summo wrestler? You have to be fat and able to hold. I think that's it.

Not on defense. His defenses have stunk every year. Fortunately his offenses have been so superior they covered up for the horrific performances of the D.

Ok maybe I shouldn't have posted right after watching a replay of the Cards-Packers wildcard game.

Just think, next week you can watch a replay of the New Orleans game. Not that that would make you feel any better.

thanks, I couldn't remember if it was a year after or the same year as Leinart. And I'm not anti-Lutui. I thought that bringing he and Leinart together again would be a benefit.

But he sure seems to struggle with mental errors.

Not sure if you were referencing my post but I was saying that maybe Lutui has given up. His focus has been questionable, at least at times and now he has obviously not done any work in the offseason...it doesn't present a very optimistic view of what he's thinking right now.

It doesn't take big guys like Lutui long to lose a ton of weight. I predict he'll be at playing weight and will again be starting this year.

You don't have to be fat to be a sumo. It is the smaller ones that have dominated in recent years.

I think thats a bit off, I'm pretty sure when we took him a good number of people were upset, wanting names such as Lendale or Eric Winston or from the guard spot Max Jean-Gilles.

Lutui was considered more a 2nd round talent, but inferior to Gilles; the things in his favor were that he had blocked for Leinart at USC, I think had played some tackle there as well (unsure of this) and also he was a lifelong cardinals fan. It was his rookie year he played well and showed good promise leading some to say he could make pro bowls.

Given the names you just listed we really couldn't have hit big with any of those in hindsight.
