I keep hearing that we will have to make some veteran cuts in order to sign our rookies now that we signed A-Dub to a long contract (thank God for that too). Who do you think gets cut? I've heard it can't be an outside backer since we don't have any. The only place we have extra players is reciever. Do we trade Q now just to clear cap space (for a pick)? What are your opinions...

St.Pierre. Like what was discussed in another thread, why pay a guy 1 million bucks to hold a clipboard when that money could be used on guys who actually see the field.I don't think the Cards will cut him, but i would. Matt Ware and Pago are two other guys that i can see gone. Spach may be an injury casualty. I think the 53 man roster is pretty set.

A nod to Cbus for setting up the format. Placing backups in parenthesis, and sharetimers get the "/".
QB(3)-Warner (Leinart, St.Pierre)

FB(1)-Kreider

RB(3)-Hightower/Wells/Wright

WR(6)-Fitzgerald, Boldin (Doucet), Breaston (Long), Morey

TE(3)-Patrick (Spach or Pope), Becht

OL(9)-Gandy (Keith), Wells, Sendlein (Canfield), Lutui (E. Brown), L. Brown (Johnson)

DT/NT(6)-Dockett, Watson/Robinson (Branch), Campbell (Iwebema)

DE/OLB(4)-Berry/Haggans, Okeafor (Brown)

ILB(5)-Dansby (Highsmith, Bullock), Hayes (Hobson)

CB(5)-DRC, McFadden (Toler), Brown (Dowling)

S(4)-Wilson (Lewis), Rolle (Johnson)

K(1)-Rackers
P(1)-Graham
LS(1)-Leach
KR(1)-Garvin

PS-Davis, Long, Palko, Howling, Keyes, Dykes
Thoughts:
For RB's- I think we see more of Wright than we did of Arrington. Bottom line is that the competition at RB gets very interesting.

For WR's- I'm rooting for Morey to make the squad, but a ST specialist is a hard thing to hang on as. Especially with all the CB's and WR's on the roster right now. Clearly, the team is trying to get faster on the outside, but it also highly values their veterans.

For TE's- Spach spends a lot of time on the Pup and injury list, or could be pre-emptively put on IR, but the team only goes with 3 TE's and Pope isn't one of them if Spach looks like he can go.

For OL- Like the versatility on the defensive line, there's a lot of switch potential on the offensive line. The backups Keith, Johnson, Canfield, and Brown can all play multiple positions on the line. The starters get another year of playing together and trying to build some real chemestry.

CBus, thanks. Good job. I doubt that the team will go w/o a backup center, and I don't think that Wells can be considered the backup, more like an emergency center. JMO.

Chris Vincent -- I have no idea why they keep bringing this guy back. He was nothing more than a special teams player in college but for some reason he's here every year for training camp.

It doesn't have to be veteran cuts; & certainly doesn't have to be high-profile ones (unless the coaches and FO want to go in that direction).

It's just a matter of reviewing a roster that may even have a few more than 80 players (due to technicalities in League rules) and doing a little selective pruning. It even might mean cutting one or two guys we just signed, but that sometimes happens in pro football.

It just occurred to me: Is there anything to prevent a team from agreeing to terms with all its rookies but not making the signing official (& avoiding the rookie cap pool rule) until the very last minute?

This would enable the club to buy time to better ascertain which players did best during OTA's, mini-camp & part of camp & which injuries might render any players less likely to compete during all or part of the regular season.

Wiz makes the competition promise to every single player on the team. Dont think it holds any more or less water for BSP then any other player IMO.

Alan Branch

He wont be cut for cost savings, he would cost a lot of money against the cap to cut.

Fransisco would save about 500k which would gives us the perfect amount to sign all of the rookies.

Chris Vincent isnt even in the top 51 salaries that count against the cap, so cutting him does nothing for are cap. Only look for players in the top 51 salaries when trying to figure out the question of this thread "who to cut", but dont forget to add in the 52nd players salary on the list becuase they will not be in the top 51 salaries.

For example, and note that my spreadsheet has been updated but the example still applies. Lets say we cut a guy in the top 51 like Pago Togafau who would save use 460k against the cap if cut. We now have to add in Ali Highsmiths salary back into the cap because he will now be pushed into the top 51 salaries - meaning we actually only save $62,000 against the cap. Not exactly great cap savings when you do the whole math.

Finally we dont need to cut anyone at all, until July 15th that is. I say that because we still have a month and a week to still get Dansby extended. A Dansby extension would fix everything, but if he isnt extended by that date then and only then will we need to do some work which doesnt have to be just cuts it can also be restructure of other players contracts or possible extensions of other players.

Joeshmo, who do you see as the most likely candidates for extension both in terms of savings and because it makes sense longterm for the team? I think of Breaston but imagine the firestorm that creates with Q and Dockett.

Francisco was my choice before Joe's post. And he is still my top by the end.

Joe... Can you speak to the benefits of cutting Pope?

I don't think Wiz will cut Morey.

An extension to Breaston wouldn't save $$$, and is hardly required at this point.

I've wondered, and Joe may have the answer, whether turning Hayes (salary $3.4M - no bonus - contract expiring in 2011) into a bonus or partial bonus, and, perhaps, Wells ($2.4M - no bonus - expiring in 2010) would be an effective way to go and find the extra $$$, if Dansby does not get re-signed.

Why do people want to cut Francisco? He's one of the best special teamers on the club.

Why do people want to cut Francisco? He's one of the best special teamers on the club.

Two reasons - One he makes way to much money for 15 tackles a year on special teams. Two, Keith Davis is just as good on special teams, a slightly better safety, and half the cost.

He is the easiest to cut without missing anything, meaning the biggest bang for the buck in terms of cap spavings compared ability/replacability.

The new DC has said that the linebackers are to be designated left and right, no longer strong and weak. Okeafor (right) and Haggans (left) have been named the starters.

Depth: Okeafor / Berry / Brown
****: Haggans / Hobson / Davis

Before I get to everyones questions according to Urbans latest blog we no longer have to worry about creating about 500k more cap space to sign all of our rookies. According to Urban, Wilsons cap hit this year is actually 9.7 mill not over 10 mill like we originally thought. Meaning we have enough to get our rookies signed. The issue then becomes having a buffer for injuries of which we still dont have.

Q - Who do you see as the most likely candidates for extension both in terms of savings and because it makes sense longterm for the team?

A - For Savings and long term sense I only see two players - Dansby, Rolle, and Okeafer. Maybe Gandy but he may not makes sense in terms of long term with Four young possible up and comers at OT - Keith, Brown, Johnson, Vallejo.

Q - Can you speak to the benefits of cutting Pope?
A - None, RFA tender he signed is all gauranteed.

That's three players.
