dansby, and i don't think it's even close.

after dansby, a distant second is wilson, followed closely by dockett.

Good question!

In terms of talent, one leans towards Dansby or Wilson. In terms of impact, we saw the effects of Wilson not being on the field at the end of last season. Simply put the Cards D performs better over the course of a game with AW out there.

Dansby, while at times spectacular, remains inconsistent. Granted that even when performing at less than his best Dansby is still good. But I do think that his impact to the overall performance of the defense as a whole is less than Wilson's.

Hayes is very solid! While not being the individual performer that either Dansby or Wilson are, it might well be that he is the glue which holds it all together.

My final answer... Too hard to say.

My vote gets Hayes.

Hayes isn't even a top 5 linebacker in then entire NFC West, let alone the best defensive player on the team. Don't get me wrong I love me a Hayes, but let's not spill kool aid all over the place

No way in hell Watson, Hood, or Rolle should be ahead of Hayes.
Watson and Hood are the two most underrated players on this team IMO and both are vital to any success we may have. I am looking for Rolle to flourish at his new home, but perhaps it is a bit premature to rank him too highly.

Hayes is good, but far from great. He is a high energy leader who you always want on your team, but I wouldn't call him a playmaker. There is a reason that MLBs normally fall in the draft.

To me it's obviously AW or KD. Both bring plenty of disruption to the table. If Dansby becomes as good (almost) a run stopper as Hayes then he'll get the nod. Until then it goes to AW.

Surprise
He was hurt last year but the second half of 2006 Chike was the best player on the defense. The coaches were really talking him up last year during camp till he got hurt. He really didn't get a chance to play in the new system and a new position like he will this year. I think he will excel in his role in this defense. It wouldn't surprise me to see him have a great year in 2008.

KD has to win that battle IMO because his game really has no weaknesses while AW tends to be a liability in the pass game from time to time. Thats said, I think this is Dansby's last year here while I think AW will be resigned and we will be a better team for it.

It's a toss up with me between Wilson and Dansby. I'd consider Dockett more if I knew he'll be as good at the 3-4 DE as he was at 4-3 DT.

Dansby, and yes, it is close. Difference between best player, and most valuable.

It's the same as the Fitz/Boldin neverending debate. Fitz is arguably the better player (it's close) but Boldin is more valuable to the franchise. (and that's not close)

I wish Wilson was stronger in pass coverage.

Dansby or Hayes.

I dont get your logic here considering that Dockett just had the best season of his career as a 3-4 DE.
