Auburn basketball's Johni Broome has been on a tear in his last go-around in the NCAA Tournament.

And because of that, the Tigers are one win away from securing the final spot in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament.

Broome, who has been one of college basketball's top players all season, is a headache for opponents to scout and defend against with his lengthy frame and the physicality and toughness that he brings inside the paint.

Entering Sunday's Elite Eight game vs. No. 2 seed Michigan State, Broome is averaging a double-double in the NCAA Tournament this year and a career-high 18.5 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game this season.

Through one half in Atlanta at State Farm Arena, Broome has already locked up his 21st double-double of the season — marking the second consecutive game he reached double figures in points and rebounds before halftime. But he left the game in the second half after a hard fall.

A win on Sunday would send Auburn to the program's third-ever Final Four, where it will play for the program's first national championship trophy.

Here's what you need to know about Broome:

Who is Johni Broome?

Broome is a 6-foot-9 senior forward on Auburn's men's basketball team, where he has started every game for the last three seasons.

The SEC Player of the Year hails from Plant City, Florida, and began his collegiate career at Morehead State. After spending two seasons at Morehead State from 2020-22, Broome entered the transfer portal and joined Auburn's roster.

In three NCAA Tournament games this season, Broome is averaging a double-double at 14.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per game while shooting 41.9% from the field. He is one of four finalists for the Naismith National Player of the Year, where it's believed by many in college basketball to be a two-man race between Broome and Duke freshman guard Cooper Flagg.

He is coming off his 20th double-double of the season and fourth career double-double in the NCAA Tournament in Auburn's Sweet 16 win over No. 5 seed Michigan, which put him one shy of tying Jeff Moore's program record for most double-doubles in a March Madness game.

If Broome does ends up being named the national player of the year, it will be his second player of the year hardware of the season as he was named the SEC's top player this season. Auburn notes that Broome is the only player in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history to have at least 2,500 points, at least 1,500 rebounds and at least 400 blocks in his career.

With Broome's success this season at Auburn, he has played his way into being a projected late first-round/early second-round NBA draft pick this season, according to several NBA mock drafts, including USA TODAY's.
