am starting a thread on who we should trade for and who is up on the block. If you wanted to trade then who would you trade for? I guess I will start it off and say out of everyone remotly available I would go after Vladimir Guerrero. Also I would be looking to add a quality All-Star that hits great for Average and also hits at least 20+ HR's a year. Would anyone take our left overs for a good-great hitter ?

Available players on D-Backs

Danny Bautista
Tony Womack ? If anyone would take him ?
Elmer Dessens ? If anyone would take him ?
Matt Mantei
Bret Prinz
Mike Myers

Players of Interest

Vladimir Guerrero
Jose Vidro
Chipper Jones I doubt he is available ?
Shannon Stewart
Carlos Beltran

I say deal Tony Womack, Matt Mantei and Mike Myers for
Vladimir Guerrero/ Expos

You must be on some sort of drug. You don't think anyone has offered more for Vlad than Womack, Mantei, and Myers? Seriously it would take some top level talent--prospects and major leaguers to get this guy. Not happening.

Didja hear about the guy who had a flat tire, right outside the fence of a mental institution? As he was taking off the flat tire, the lug nuts rolled away, and down a sewer.

He stood there scratching his head. Then an inmate from inside the fence called to him, "Hey buddy, why don't you take one lug nut from each of the other tires and use it on the spare? It'll get you to a gas station!"

The guy was amazed at how sensible his idea was and said, "I don't get it. With thinking like that, why are you inside there?"

The inmate answered, "Mr., I may be crazy, but I ain't stupid!"

The Expos trading Vladimir for Womack/Mantei/Myers? They may be crazy, but they aren't stupid!

As much as I drool at the thought of Guerrero in RF for the D'backs, it's going to take alot more than Womack/Mantei/Myers. Even more, the D'backs cannot afford his salary. Jerry has already said there'll be no free agents signed next year.

Sorry, Tired, but it's just not going to happen!

Yeah I realize the pot is to small, but what happened if we threw in Bautista and Spivey with the deal. Would they bite ? Would it be reasonable to give that much up ? Also we might be dumping to much salery, however the Expos were looking and picking up Juan anyways.

also is Vladi a free agent after this year ?

Pretty much my point is this. If we trade might as well go for one of the best in the league. The Expos need some players to make a run and we could use the power and hits in the lineup. Why would the Expos give up so little for Vladimir Guerrero

A. They are in the playoff run and need multiple players for more support
B. Vladimir Guerrero's contract is up after this year and he would be expendable
C. He is currently on the DL and getting 5 players for a run is better than a hurt Vladimir Guerrero

Why I want Vladimir Guerrero so bad.
A. 27 years old and one of the best hitters over the past 5 years
B. great Glove in Right Field
C can change the momentum of the game with one swing

My thinking is if you are going to go for pop in the lineup you might as well go all out.

If the Expos are in a playoff run why would they trade their best player? Also, Vlad is a free agent. You think we could afford to keep him after this year? None of the players you mentioned are anywhere close to being star players. To get a player of Vlad's calibre you give up stars, or future stars. That's the way it works. Also, the Expos were gonna take Juan, but the Rangers were gonna keep paying most of the salary.

I think there will be many teams desperate to trade for Mantei by the end of July. There are a lot of teams in need of a closer and teams will make a trade and give up a little more than they should. A great example of this was in 1990 when the Red Sox needed a reliever and at the end of the trading deadline traded Bagwell for Larry Anderson.

Hey, while we're at it, can we trade Elmer Dessens to Seattle for Ichiro?

Also I'm thinking the Suns should trade Casey Jacobsen and Tsakalidis to the Lakers for Shaq.

Adam,
I think Vlad would be cheaper due to being a free agent next year and if they get rid of mantei and Womack won't that free up almost 12+ million next year. ? Also Vladi might be there best player on the Expos, but he has missed something like 25+ straight games. I think if you offer those 5 players fior a half of year of service it would be plausable. In addition Vladi would probably looking in the neighborhood of 15-16 million next year and with the free salery from the trade we could keep him and sign him to a longer contract after the trade. I disagree on the fact you have to cough up a ton of star players in this circumstance, because you are dealing with a half/year contract on a injured star. The main idea would be to lock him up for a good price range while he is injured and you get a discount. I am also sure the Expos would be interested in getting something for him now instead of nothing in a few more months. Do you still think it is impossible ?

Adam,
So if you were the Expos and new Vladi was gone next year you would not take Mantei, Womack, Myers, bautista and Spivey ? what do you think it would take to get Vladi ? My whole point I was trying to make was that if you were going to add someone why not add the best. This is probably one of the only times that Vladi will ever be available and they should do what is needed to pull the triger.

I wouldn't take that. Womack would be gone after this year and wouldn't help them while he's there, Myers stinks, Mantei is always injured, Bautista is a toss up, and Spivey is struggling. Not one player out of that group is a top notch player. If the Expos would be so anxious to trade an injured Vlad why would we be so anxious to get him? You don't think another team would offer more than that crap that you came up with? Seriously, other teams covet this guy too, in fact every team probably does. I have a feeling someone could top that offer. Hell, if another team offered some peanuts and a bucket of baseballs that would be better then what you thought of.
Also, yeah, we're losing contracts after this year, but people forget we're still paying a lot of money becaus of all the deferred money.
Keep your pipe dream while you can, though, and whatever you're smoking please send some my way!

Or who do you think they should try and get to help them in the lineup ? One last question and that is if Vladi is a free agent do you think he will be headed for the Yanks or Mets ?

I think if we offered maybe a package of

Cintron
Terrero
Tracy
Patterson and/or Good

we might be able to get Vlad. I don't think they want Spivey--they already have Vidro. I don't know if I would make a trade at this point. The only thing I could see is trading Mantei.

I would do it if Citron was out of the picture and you could lock up Vladi for 4-5 years. Who could you throw in instead of Citron to replace his value for the trade. Also you would have to throw how much to Vladi to get a 4-5 year contract signed. Does 15-16 million sound about right per year or is that to low/High ?

Who else interests you to push for ?

The line up would look nice and the rebuilding would be light years ahead. I believe the age on the right of the name is right ?

C Chad Moeller 27
1B Lyle Overbay 26 or Shea Hillenbrand 27
2B Matt Kata 25 or Junior Spivey 28
SS Craig Counsell 33
3B Alex Cintron 25
RF Vladimir Guerrero 27
CF Steve Finley 38
LF Luis Gonzalez 33

At least the youth movement would start to happen. The enthusiasm the Rookies bring is to much to ignore plus I could not see Vladimir disrupting the flow to much in this line up. The last part is we should be going for the best player available at a young age.

The biggest thing that has come out of this year is this: There is a team beyond Randy and Curt. Guess what? This team of no names are not only beating the teams that are supposed to be beat, they have assembled the largest winning streak in team history. Maybe a trade to ONLY dump salary is an option at this point.

JD Drew is trade bait...

...according to cnnsi.

Give 'em Mantei, Myers, Q for JD. Downside is he had knee surgery this year.

Pitching: They've had six different pitchers save games this season, including immortal closers like Cal Eldred and Kiki Calero. Their relief ERA of 5.10 is dead last in the NL, and only Woody Williams and Matt Morris are prospering as starters.

Izzy went on the DL originally for a sore shoulder. Mantei would provide closer insurance and we'd dump his salary.

I would trade Mantei to an AL team so he can't come back to haunt us.

Are the Diamondbacks interested in Shannon Stewart? If so they can move him to right. I would love to see Stewart in a Diamondback uniform. If the Mantei was dealt the Sidewinders have a really good closer in Bruney, who Tommy Jones thinks highly. He could set up Valverde or if Koplove is okay he could.Inside Dish: Jays could trade Stewart for rotation relief

Sporting News

The Blue Jays are under budget, enabling them to assume some or all of the pro-rated portion of left fielder Shannon Stewart's $6.2 million salary in a deal for a starting pitcher.

Stewart, a skilled leadoff hitter, would be a good fit for the A's, Royals, Dodgers and Diamondbacks, though Luis Gonzalez plays left field for Arizona and Stewart's arm is weak for right. ...

The Seattle bullpen just gave up six runs in the 9th to the Padres and they're still up. It's now 7-6 Padres. Could Seattle be calling Joe Jr.?

Red Sox need another starter with Kim now going to the bully. Trade Dessens and/or Patterson for picks and AAA guys. Only when Curt comes back and if Boston can wait that long.

Dbacks/Tigers hi lites up next on ESPN BB Tonite. Wonder what Bobby has to say now...

The Red Sox have no big hitters in their farm system. I think the only hitter they have that is tradeable is Troy Nixon and he is not a power hitter.
