Kameron Cody, the 4-star junior lineman from Benedictine, announced his commitment to play football at Clemson on Saturday night.
His decision was first reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3sports.com.
Cody, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound defensive tackle, was a 2024 All-Greater Savannah first-team selection after a stellar junior campaign. He had 75 tackles, with nine for losses, and 6.5 sacks with seven quarterback hurries and was an All-State Class 4A first-team selection by the Atlanta Journal Constitution
He had a plethora of big-time offers and said he chose Clemson over LSU, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Arizona State, Indiana and UCLA.
"I visited Clemson for the first time when I was in seventh grade and then I went again for the Elite Retreat in March," Cody said in a phone interview Saturday night. "I just like the family environment they have there, it feels like home. I like how everyone interacts with each other. They can give constructive criticism and there's no fighting about it. It feels like a brotherhood, and definitely reminds me of Benedictine in that way."
The commitment is the latest chapter in the remarkable story of Cody's life. As a freshman, he had a cardiac incident at an October Benedictine practice and stop breathing on the sideline. Benedictine trainers Brian Tuten and Ed Livingston performed CPR and shocked Cody's chest three times with an automated external defibrillator to save his life after he stopped breathing. Cody was unable to breath on his own for nearly 40 minutes as he was whisked to the hospital in an ambulance with BC coach Danny Britt riding alongside his player.
Cody, who received a scholarship offer from Arkansas as an eighth grader, never lost sight of his football goals during a lengthy recovery. He had an ICD (an Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) installed in his heart, and was back on the field for the Cadet's season opener his sophomore year.
"We're really proud of Kam," Benedictine defensive coordinator Galen Houston said Saturday night. "He's very athletic and is a big, strong kid with a lot of toughness. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to get off the ball. He plays inspired and has an attitude when he's out there on the field.
"He's one of the rare interior linemen that can stay on the field for every down because he can do it all — from stopping the run, to rushing the passer to chasing down a ball carrier downfield," Houston said. "Kam is just a special player."
Cody has credited the close knit, family atmosphere at Benedictine for helping in his recovery, and said he got the same type of feeling at Clemson.
"Coach Eason (Clemson defensive line coach Nick Eason) gives me the vibe of an uncle who is there to break everything down and help you in any way he can," Cody said. "He was mostly raised by his mom, like me, and he is going to help me become a better player and a better man. And coach Dabo (Swinney) reminds me a lot of coach Britt. I feel really comfortable at Clemson."
Houston thinks Clemson is the perfect choice for Cody.
"Clemson is Kam's dream school and we've kind of known that's where he was going for a while — we were just waiting for him to pull the trigger and commit. Coach Eason actually played at Swainsboro High for (former Calvary Day coach) Mark Stroud, so they have that connection," Houston said. "I think the program is a perfect fit for his personality. He needs coaches that he can trust, and Clemson has that for him."
Cody said he is glad he committed early so he can focus on his senior season with the Cadets, who reached the Class 4A quarterfinals last year.
"I think juggling all the recruiting stuff was getting in the way of me being fully focused on football and school at Benedictine," Cody said. "I always knew I wanted to go to Clemson and when I went to the Elite Retreat it made that clear. Now I can focus on trying to win another state title in my senior year at BC."
