if you take that one good game against NE (where they keyed on the running game and dared schaub to beat them) out of his stats he is a whopping

48comp/100att 48% for 527yds 2tds and 4 ints a 54 passer rating...wow.

Probably the same reason people are in love with Phillip Rivers and Jay Cutler. Which means there is no logical reason. They just think they may be good. You could use the reverse question and ask why everyone hates John Navarre? There's no basis, just a perception to what people think they can do. Schaub has looked decent in pre-season games but we all know that doesn't mean a whole lot. The good thing this year is we should get to see alot of Navarre in pre-season and start to form a little opinion on his ability.

That's the same reason I carried a torch for Molly Ringwold when I was in high school.

Why do NFL owners, scounts, and others completely lose their mind around draft time?

Little or no production in college, oh wait! He ran a 4.2...benched 50 times....He is a #1 pick with our coaching/system. Opposite: Wow this guy was a starter from day 1, most tackles by any player in school history, a real leader on the field, plays hurt...but he rana 4.7 and he is 1" shorter than the "ideal" height for that position. He drops.

EGO EGO EGO

As far as the back-up QB syndrom:

Scott Mitchell
Drew Henson
David Garard
Matt Schaub
Billy Volek

There are certainly more but let's just call this the Peter Principle.

You could throw Vince Young's name in that statement.

Seems like what your talking about is the "eyeball test." I think there's some merit to it. Schuab passes the eyeball test. Navarre does not. Some guys have "it," some guys don't.

Bring it closer to home:

1) Stoney Case
2) Chris Greisen
3) Preston Parsons
4) Josh McCown (sorry, couldn't resist:))

and add:

1) Kelly Holcomb
2) John Kitna
3) Clint Longley (shows my age :))-he parlayed one game into a nice payday.

There are so many...but it's always fun to root for the underdog isn't it?

Some guys work out pretty good...Favre being one, although I don't think he played much in Atlanta before he was traded? Kurt Warner is sort of the backup who made good too.

I have no idea! This is the sort of madness that got A.J. Feeley a big deal with Miami, when all he did was have like 14 good quarters of football.

I agree. And Frankly, Matt Schaub has quite possibly the worst supporting cast in the NFL when he has started for the Falcons.

As little as I like Vick, he still provides a huge element to the Falcons offense, and without his running ability their offense is IMO a bottom five offense in terms of skill players.

I would judge Schaub a little more harshly if he actually had a good receiver corps to throw to, but he doesn't...Atlanta's receivers are LOUSY.

schaub is a good qb. you can't throw out that ne game. new england had one of top rated defenses at the time. for a young qb to play as well as he did, againist the the defending champs, the defensive guru that belchiek is, that is simply amazing. that is why everyone is on the matt schaub bandwagon. i posted before that if the caridnals were not going to resign warner than they should trade for the falcons matt schaub. schaub is the real deal and whoever gets him is going to get a hall of famer.

it's a gamble and an evaluation of talent

let's not forget that guys like trent green, matt hasselbeck, kurt warner and marc bulger have all done fairly well for themselves

the analysis isn't always right on - but it does work sometimes

Ummm... Wasn't New England like missing all of their starting cornerbacks and the Hall of Fame safety? Thier defense was less than solid all season long.

yep, the very next week Jake Plummer lit them up for 254 and 2 TD's, the week before Brees had 248 and 2 TD's and was 19-24. At that point in the season New England could NOT play pass defense.

I think Schaub has talent but I don't understand the fascination beyond he's played well in preseason. but then I once thought Rob Johnson was going to be a star so what the hell do I know about Qb's?

Navarre was so promising that he lasted all the way to the 7th round. Dude was a hairs breadth away from being a rookie FA. Why the hateon for Schaub and Rivers. Here's a news flash. Both dudes had better numbers playing against bigtime programs than Navarre or any number of the freaktards that give some people woodies.

Rivers put up the best numbers against the best competition of anyone in his QB class. I've said it here before, anyone who is down on the boy simply did not watch him play. People bag on his mechanics while failing to notivce that his footwork was actually better than Eli's... lets not mention the fact that he was widely considered to have the best head on his shoulders of all the QBs.

Why the hype for Schaub and Garrard? As someone who watches a lot of football from the Southeast (SEC, ACC and others) I saw these guys play quite a bit. They had the "it" factor and I'd love to have either of these guys on my roster. Oh yeah, we have Navarre, the second coming of Kent Graham. That is Kent Graham with a slower release and less charisma. I'd love to be proven wrong but I just don't see it happening. He has never looked good and the fact that we keep him on our roster scares the hell out of me.

.

My problems with Rivers have nothing to do with release or intelligence, i just don't think he has the arm to succeed in the NFL. All he does is dump it off. When your own teammates respond to your comments by saying he hasn't proven anything to us yet he has to do it on the field first, that implies they're not convinced either. I've yet to see a single quote from a Charger player saying I have confidence that Rivers will get it done he's really impressed me. Most accounts you read are that Rivers has not impressed the Chargers so far, that Schottenheimer made it quite clear he wanted to keep Brees, and that they're simply trying to make the best of it now going with Rivers.

He's a smart kid and by all accounts a leader, but at this point he doesn't throw the ball downfield at all. People keep telling me his arm is stronger than I think it is but there's got to be SOME reason why he constantly dumps the ball off? that's not their system, Brees threw it downfield.

i am not talking about all season long. i am talking about when they played the patriots. if you know anything about the patriots repuation, then you would know that it doesn't matter who is in their they just shut you down. he was in his second year without a whole lot of starts under his belt. that was his 2nd or 3rd start of his career. saying to take away a game from him is discrediting him of what he has done. you can't do that. why is so hard to believe that this player has what it takes.
