The timing of yesterday's signings was specifically designed to help entice Emmitt to sign with the Cards.

I predict a 3 year deal which we may overpay just a bit on.

They will offer him the starting job with Shipp as a very capable back up/3rd and long back.

Emmitt will be an outstanding tutor for Shipp and a great presence in the locker room.

Emmitt will put butts in the seats at SDS and jersey sales across the country.

SDS is a grass field in very good condition.

NE- plays on turf.
KC- Holmes will be back, field is bad.
TB- front office is not jumping up and down at Emmitt

I'd be very surprised to see him leave AZ without a contract offer and mildly surprised if he doesn't accept it.

They were discussing this on KDUS just now. They said someone was claiming signing Emmitt would result in 10,000 season tickets being sold(extra) and the announcer was scoffing at that saying maybe 1000 tops.

One seems to like the idea, thinks Marcel is "very good", Emmitt was much better and combined they'd be great. Thinks Emmitt will break the loser mentality etc.

I think there's some merit but if we pay Emmitt a ton of money and promise him PT then there's the potential for it hurting Shipp's career.

I do think Emmitt can help Shipp with things like blitz pickups and how to stay in shape and keep healthy, I just don't want to sign him at the expense of guys who can help us more.

I don't understand the locker presence that people think Emmitt brings. Where was that presence when the Cowboys were partying at the White House daily or the last couple of years to when the Cowboys went down the toilet? I never got a feeling that he was tutoring his backup last year, just that he wanted more playing time to get his yardage record. The only reason he wants to come here is to pad his record, and that will not necessarily benefit the Cardinals.

Well, I agree that the reason he want to keep playing is that he wants to reach 20,000 yards and he believes he can still play, but I think the fact the he was being forced out in Dallas was the reason he would not want to "tutor" Troy Hambrick.

I was never a big Emmitt fan simply b/c he was a Cowpud. But he is a winner and you can't argue with success.

He was a winner when he was surrounded by other talent. Of the big three, Aikman, Cokehead, and Emmitt, I think Emmitt was far and away the most important piece of those Cowboy teams. But when the talent level fell in Dallas, Emmitt was not a winner. The Cowboys sucked. Is the talent level of the Cards that much better than the Cowboys teams of the last few years? I don't think so. We don't even have any WRs for cryin' out loud.

I can't see how Emmit Smith will cause anybody to go out and buy a season ticket.

Cowpuke fans hate the Cards.

The only valid reason to sign Emmit Smith is if you think he can help win games. Mike Jurecki was saying some of the coaches are not at all enthused with adding Emmit to the team.

I think clearly Smith would putt some people in the seats for the first 4-5 games. If we did not win at least half of those I think his attraction would fade. Sign him to help the team but I think a bad move if you think you will attract enough people to pay for him unless you win.

I think the Cards have such a history of losing that we have not really had any locker room presence in years. I do think a guy like Smith can change an attitude in the locker room and could probably translate that into some extra victories. When I listen to him he sort of changes my attitude and I am not even in the locker room. He was in Little Rock recently to give a speech.

Why didn't he do that in Dallas then?

Good post Skkorp.....

Personally, at this point of his career, I don't think that he would be an upgrade over Shipp. Getting him for close to the veteran minimum would make sence.

I could see coaches not being overly enthused about bringing in Smith. With all of the holes in the Cards roster, I would think that the coaches would rather the dollars be spent on areas of serious need.

New England plays on grass, not turf. They'd be a very good fit for him. They need him more than we do and, if they can under the cap, might try and take him away.

I do not see him as an upgrade over Shipp and would not trade Shipp for Emmitt but we need two backs and he would be an addition not an upgrad.

And an addition that is not an upgrade, and is very much on the downside of his career, should be able to be signed for between the league minimum and 1.5 per season.
