The Los Angeles Rams will have plenty of options in the first round of the draft this year. They can stand pat and pick one of the best players on the board or they can move up for someone they covet who may not make it to No. 26.
But perhaps their best option will be to trade out of the first round altogether. Sitting near the end of Round 1, they’re in a good spot to potentially move down if there’s a team at the top of Round 2 looking for a quarterback. The reason? Every first-round pick gets a fifth-year option added to his contract, thus allowing the team to keep him for an extra year at a reasonable cost.
Two teams that might be looking to move up from the second round are the Giants and Browns.
New York holds the third and 34th overall picks, which could give them two opportunities to draft a quarterback. The same goes for the Browns, who are sitting at No. 2 and 33. Assuming Cam Ward goes to the Titans at No. 1 overall, Shedeur Sanders will likely be the next quarterback off the board. If the Browns and Giants both pass on him at No. 2 and 3, they could wait to take a quarterback later on in the first round.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants and Browns have both spent “extensive time” with Jaxson Dart during the pre-draft process. They’re not going to take him in the top five but he’s someone who could come off the board at the end of Round 1.
In the event that both the Browns and Giants want Dart, the Rams could sell their pick to the highest bidder. Los Angeles could very well be looking to move down in order to bridge the gap between No. 26 and 90, making the Browns and Giants perfect trade partners.
Here are two hypothetical trades that would work out based on the Rich Hill trade value chart.
While those would technically be overpays by the Giants and Browns, keep in mind, they’d be moving up for a quarterback and could be trying to beat each other out – thus, there’s a bit of desperation factored in.
The Rams might wind up taking Dart themselves but if they either don’t like him as a prospect or feel 26 is too early, they could be open for business in an attempt to move down.
Les Snead tends to accumulate picks in the draft and he’d probably be thrilled about adding an extra third-rounder, giving Los Angeles four selections in the top 101.
