The Aaron Rodgers saga reportedly hinges on how interested the Minnesota Vikings are in the quarterback's services.

The Athletic's Michael Silver, Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis reported on Saturday that Rodgers, who reportedly hopes to sign with the Vikings, could consider retirement if Minnesota opts not to add him as a free agent.

"Rodgers has been targeted by the [Pittsburgh] Steelers and [New York] Giants but has essentially put both teams on hold while he waits for clarity regarding the Vikings’ situation," the report reads. "If Minnesota ceases to be an option, it’s also possible that Rodgers will turn down both the Steelers (a 2024 playoff team) and Giants and instead opt for retirement."

The Vikings would have to choose between signing Rodgers for a Super Bowl push or allowing 2024 first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy to take starting reps this fall.

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell reportedly has the biggest say in the Rodgers decision, per The Athletic report.

"All of this falls on O’Connell, who would have to manage Rodgers’ big personality, the heightened expectations the quarterback’s presence would trigger and the media scrutiny that would follow," the report reads. "It’s a swing the coach may decide is well worth taking, but it’s not a decision he’ll make lightly."

We'll see if Rodgers is the next veteran quarterback to sport a Vikings jersey or if Minnesota turning elsewhere really sends the future Pro Football Hall of Famer into retirement.
