Chances are you're here because while watching the NCAA men's tournament, you noticed Wofford center Kyler Filewich shooting his free throws underhand and are wondering 'what gives?'.
Here's the deal: Filewich, a fifth-year senior, had been struggling with his free throws for years. Last season, the Wofford star shot 31.6 percent from the line, leading to his coaches asking if he would consider switching up his form from a traditional shot to granny style. They felt it was necessary, because as Filewich told The Athletic, he tends to play less aggressive when he's missing free throws. That's typically not what you want from your starting big man.
To sweeten the deal, Wofford even brought in the godfather of granny style, Rick Barry, for a free throw boot camp.
The results have been a bit mixed.
Filewich made the switch official in February and has gone 18-of-51 from the line (35.3 percent) since then.
Overall, he's shooting more free throws this season — he's taken 132 attempts this year after just 98 in 2023-24 — but still shooting 31.8 percent. Wofford will need the change to start paying dividends in the tournament to keep their season alive.
