The Los Angeles Lakers are losing games in bunches at the worst possible time of the NBA season. They have dropped eight of their last 12 games, including an absolute heartbreaker on Thursday to the Chicago Bulls on Josh Giddey's halfcourt buzzer-beater, and they're on the verge of not having home-court advantage in any round of the playoffs.
They're barely in fourth place in the Western Conference with a 44-29 record, the same record that the fifth-place Memphis Grizzlies — the team the Lakers will play on Saturday — currently have.
While Los Angeles has been at full strength for its last four games, Austin Reaves, who scored 30 points on Thursday, tweaked his ankle during that game. He's listed as questionable for Saturday's contest versus Memphis.
Memphis will be difficult to defeat even with a healthy Reaves, even though it has lost five of its last seven games and fired Taylor Jenkins on Friday after he had been its head coach for six seasons. The team ranks second in the NBA in points per game and first in pace, and its players are young, feisty and hungry.
Saturday's game will be the last one of a four-game road trip for the Lakers. They will return home to play the second-place Houston Rockets on Monday and the resurgent Golden State Warriors on Thursday.
