The spurs have always done well after the all start break during the duncan era and dont appear to be slowing down now. they have won 7 straight and are on the 2nd game of a back to back tonight against houston. Seeing that we have played poorly lately, and they are on fire is there a chance that they will overcome the 4 game deficit we hold on them to take the 2nd seed? im starting to get worried, earlier it looked like we have number 2 in the bag.

We just won big without Marion and Diaw, the sky is definitely NOT falling.

We've played "poorly" (and yet still holding onto the 2nd seed) with Steve Nash down and out of the lineup. He's back, and we've been winning (Philadelphia the exception). No need to start sharpening those knives, just in case.

How exactly have the Suns "played poorly lately"?

They've won 6 of the last 7, which is a .857 winning percentage--better than their season average. They may not have all been pretty blowouts, but geez we haven't had the full starting team healthy since way before the all-star break.

Maybe your expectations are just so high because of the two streaks, but come on, be realistic. We're fine!

Mavs
Suns -4.5
Spurs -9
Utah -10

That's the top 4 in the West right now.

The Spurs have been consistent all season, but the Suns have been even better.

I don't see them relinquishing the 2 seed, but I don't think the Mavs give up the 1 seed.

arwillan here is what you need to do /wrist the world is coming to an end.

i never said the world was coming to and end or that our team is in bad shape or anything of the sorts, i simply asked if anyone thought it was possible. Reading the mavs forums, i found that many of them thought it was a possibility and a few thought there was no doubt it would happen.

how are we playing poorly lately?
in the month of feburary we lost 5 games while up to that point in the season we had only lost 9 games. thats definitely alarming, especially since we lost to ATL/SEA/PHI in 3 of those 5 games, very poor teams that we should have run right out of the gym.

The better question is do the Spurs hold onto the 3rd spot?

However it plays out all four top teams will have a tough matchup in the second round. The first won't be a cakewalk either.

And most of those losses were with Nash out of the lineup, so your point is lost because you fail to address that extremely important aspect.

Concentrating on the comment as stated above, I think it makes a valid point.

We should be concerned if there is a chance we could be dropping in the standings . . . and if we're not playing our best when we enter the (hopefully) long post-season.

It's good that D'Antoni is starting to give minutes to his bench. Injuries are not a reason for slipping. They are inevitable. This is the time to build alternate team chemistry for when we'll need it again.

I want to see a Suns championship. Especially with the passing of Dennis Johnson, who helped bring championships to every team he played for except the Suns.

Obviously there is a possibility of the Spurs of Jazz catching us, especially if the injuries continue. Having said that, I don't think it's likely if our guys get back from injuries and they step up their play for the playoff run. It is also a possibily that Dallas can come back to the pack in the last month and we could see a race for the #1 seed. Remember Detroit was on a similar run last year and eventually they cooled off somewhat and it showed in the playoffs. I wouldn't put much thought into what Mavs fans have to say in their forum, just as they wouldn't think twice about what is written here.

I really doubt it, even with the Spurs recent success I think your still in a good position to maintain the second seed. Very nice cushion between the 1 and 3 seeds, at least you know where you stand.

Right now the Suns have a 4 1/2 game lead on the Spurs with 22 games remaining for the Suns and 23 for the Spurs.

If the Suns continue on their current pace, they win 63 games (or close to it by winning 17 and losing 5). For the Spurs to win 63, they have to win but one of the rest of their games. Winning just 80% of their remaining games (like their record over the past 10) would put the Spurs at no better than 60 wins (59.4 actually rounds to 59).

For all the wishful thinking by the Mavs fans, the Spurs won't catch the Suns without a serious collapse by the Suns due to injuries.

Wishful thinking? We don't really care... either way you two will be playing each other in the second round, but i'm pretty sure you will have HCA.

we wouldnt meet the mavs in the 2nd round if they have 1st seed and we have 2nd, it would be the 3rd round (western conference finals).refresh my memory if im wrong, but doesnt seeding determine HCA throughout the entire playoffs? that would mean that the mavs have HCA if we were to meet in the WCF, not us.

I do believe he is talking about a Suns/Spurs second round meeting. To the Mavs it wouldn't matter if the Suns and Spurs were seeded 2nd and 3rd respectively, or vice versa

So your saying you would not rather play a lower seed then face the Spurs!?!? That's complete bunk. As a fan you want the 1st seed and the easiest path in the playoffs. To say that Mavs fans would not care if the Suns or some other team eliminated the Spurs so they don't play the Mavs is dumb. Heck if the Suns could avoid the Mavs, Spurs and Utah...that would be gravy. It will never happen.

As an NBA fan though I want to see a great playoffs. I can't wait to see any combination of Suns-Mavs, Spurs-Mavs, Suns-Spurs.

Right now the 7th and 8th teams are the Nuggets and the Clippers, with the Lakers in 6th at 3 1/2 games ahead of the Nuggets. None of these teams are likely to get out of the first round.

The Spurs have only a game over the Jazz. The loser of this battle plays the Rockets (with Yao back) while the winner is likely to play the Lakers in the first round. That's a huge difference.

If the Jazz finish third, that would mean they would play the Suns in the second round with the Mavs meeting the Spurs. So far this season, the Suns have had trouble with the Jazz, but the Spurs are probably a bigger threat.

That's why this year's seeding is so much fun. I bet it comes down to the very end on seeding. Bring on the playoffs. I can't wait.

What i'm talking about is the fact that you two will meet in the second round, anything can happen but if I were a betting man i'd say it's a safe prediction. It doesn't matter to the Mavericks because if we maintain the top seed, we will have HCA throughout the playoffs and it becomes irrelevant who has the better record between the Suns and Spurs.

We aren't going to avoid both of you but it's nice to know that the winner of that matchup will have been through complete hell before advancing to the WCF. I'm actually uncertain who we are likely to face in the second round though, Utah or Housten.
