Does anyone know if you can edit the windows xp logon screen?

I would like mine to say welcome to windows xp and please keep your grimey fingers off the monitor.

My kids are always touching the screen and when I ask who did it, I always get the blank looks from them. "Honest Dad, I didn't do it". Maybe I should scan their prints so I have them on record

I would advise against it. I have tried it using the instructions on multiple internet sites and every time I have ended up crashing the OS and having to reinstall completely from scratch.

Rather, I would recommend editing the security policy to add your own system message. In the local security policy there is an option to load a custom message when the user presses "CTL+ALT+DEL" but unfortunately it doesn't work with the "Welcome screen"

I agree, I did not have my system crash, but I did have some issues, boot hang and the likes... Easily reversed though... I also would advise against it, at least for the average joe...

Thanks for the links CardFan. I checked it out but it does seem to involved for me. I would rather not mess anything up. I don't mind adding hardware but messing with the software scares me sometimes.

The other alteternative is to get them their own computer. I have an older NEC 550meg for sale. It has a cd player and a seperate burner, comes with a viewsonic moniter 17", has 96 meg of ram and works great. I will sell it for only 150.

Since there is a topic about login screens... how do we disable it totally. I dont have to worry about anyone loggin in to my pc, my wife and I have our own seperate ones, but I wish I didnt have that log in come up at all. Any ideas?

Go to:

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the Way Users Log in

Then you disable the Welcome screen

This will make you do the CLT+ALT+DEL when you want to login

Also,

If you want to remove the name of the last person who logged into the computer....

Go

Start > Control Panel >Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy >

Colapse the tree for "local policy" and three options should be under it. Click security options and a huge list should appear in the right side of that window.

Scroll until you see the option called "Interactive Logon: Do not Display Last user Name". Right click on this and select "enable"

reboot and it will not show the last person's login name when you press CLT+ALT+DEL
