It's taken almost three weeks, but the first winter flounder catches on Shark River are starting to come in, according to the Fisherman's Den.

The catch is very nominal to say the least but a couple of the regulars on the L Street floating dock finally got a few bites on the worm rigs. Tim Rizzuto at Fisherman's Den said two reported catches were reported to him, the biggest of which was 16 inches. Out of the tackle shops the Asbury Park Press spoke to this week, the Den is the only locale to report a winter flounder catch.

The striped bass bite hasn't picked up much since last week's reports but there are some positive signs. Phil Sciortino at the Tackle Shop in Hazlet said the bunker showed up in Raritan Bay and have pushed back to the Shrewsbury River. There has been some activity with the resident bass in Raritan River around South Amboy and a few trickling out to Cliffwood Beach in the bay proper.

Dennis Palmatier at the Hook House in Toms River said the bass are a bit spread out. There have been fishermen poking around Huddy Park, "Torpedo Park," and access points off Crabbe Road almost daily with little to report. The better fishing, as far as the bass goes, has been outside the river mouth at Good Luck Point, Berkely Island or at night by the 37 Bridge.

He said the white perch slowed down on the Toms River but fishermen are finding a little better perch bite on Mullica River.

Fishermen are starting to get the first shad of the spring run on the Delaware River. Steve Meserve, who runs Lewis Fishery in Lambertville, is getting his gear in shipshape for a possible first launch on March 28.

"We've been working on the bank trying to take the vegetation. Not the most fun work, but we need to do it so we can get the boat upriver. The nets are out form under the cabin and I hope to get the boat in the water next weekend. If all goes to plan the first haul should be on the 28th," Meserve said in an emailed fishing report

As for the final total catches from last year, Meserve said they caught a total of 40 roe, 106 bucks and returned 86.

The Paramount party boat was able to get out last Saturday to do some wreck fishing. Capt. Francis Bogan said they picked some ling, had a nice keeper pollock but did not get any cod this time around. The Ocean Explorer party boat was out the day before and Capt. Bobby Quinn said there was a pretty big ground swell as the left Shark River Inlet but the ocean itself was not bad. As far as the catch, he said his fares put some ling in the boat, but that was about it.
