MADISON – The second week of the offseason for the Wisconsin men’s basketball team started with another transfer portal loss.

Daniel Freitag, a member of UW’s 2024 recruiting class, has entered the transfer portal, Badgers coach Greg Gard confirmed Monday. Sam Kayser of 24/7 High School Hoops first reported the news on X. Freitag, a 6-foot-2 freshman guard from Bloomington, Minnesota, played in 14 games this past season, scored two points and grabbed four rebounds.

Later Monday morning Freitag posted on social media about his decision.

“My time at UW has been an enjoyable chapter in my life," he wrote. "The relationships I’ve built with my brothers here have meant everything to me, and I’m grateful for it all. Every challenge and obstacle will make me a better man, and I wouldn’t trade the adversity for anything. I never thought this day would come, but I’m aware God doesn’t make mistakes. Through it all, I will continue to trust His plan for my life and career.”

With the backcourt players John Tonje, Max Klesmit and Kamari McGee completing their eligibility this season, Freitag would have had a chance to earn more playing time next season.

The former four-star recruit is the second UW player to enter the portal since the Badgers wrapped up the season with a 91-89 loss to BYU in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Camren Hunter, a 6-2 guard who transferred into the program from Central Arkansas last spring, has also entered the portal.

The team’s roster limit will be 15 players next season, two fewer spots than it had this season.
