Eight is truly great for the Wisconsin women's hockey team.
The Badgers won their eighth national championship on Sunday night after an exhilarating 4-3 comeback win in overtime over Ohio State at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
Junior forward Kirsten Simms was the hero.
Her goal on a penalty shot with 18.9 seconds in the third period tied the game at 3-3. And then Simms, who was named the Most Outstanding Player on the All-Tournament Team, scored the game-winning goal less than three minutes into the overtime to lift the Badgers to an improbable victory.
The title is Wisconsin's second in the last three years over Ohio State, who beat the Badgers in last year's championship and also gave them their only loss of the season in November.
Wisconsin, which continues to be the standard in women's hockey, is now two titles clear of the second-highest team, Minnesota.
