Overview

JC Transfer. Started 2 years at Troy.

Strengths

Solid cover corner, has good speed and can stay with a WR throughout his breaks.

Weaknesses

Hurt the majority of his SR year. Has had a little more than one year at the Sunbelt level of competition. Not a lot of tape on this kid.

Projection

UDFA, but could go late with good workouts and if he can prove he's healthy.

Great speed in his you tube clip.

Unfortunately the dude missed last season due to academics.

My guess is that Whiz is going to tell the kid. "You catch ball.... You run Fast to end zone.... You never fumble ball".

YOU GOT IT COACH!!!!!!!!!

Cards take cornerback in sixth

The Cardinals took Troy cornerback Jorrick Calvin in the sixth round, necessary after the Cards dealt Bryant McFadden earlier today. At 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, Calvin ran a 4.64 and 4.46 40s at his pro day. The negative? He didn’t play as a senior after being ruled ineligible, because Troy administrators figured out he had run out of eligibility after starting his college career at Northwestern State in 2005 and then going to community college. An interesting choice, although he was a starter for Troy before that (two interceptions in 2008) and was on the radar of NFL teams.

Thanks for the info Shane and Shogun-----I think I am going to like this pick. Nice to find a guy with speed and who makes tackles AND plays corner. Should make nice depth for ST's and at CB/S. Might be one of Whiz's late gems in the making.

This guy screams UDFA to me, yet we picked him in the 6th. Between Skelton, Schofield and this guy, I am not thrilled with the potential 2010 impact of our 4th, 5th & 6th round picks. We are not deep enough for taking all of these risks and non-contributers in one draft.

Jorrick Calvin 5’11” 184 lbs. Troy – The Trojans have pumped some good talent into the NFL. Calvin was a junior college transfer that was a Second Team Sun Belt Conference selection his first year in Troy. Like Boyd, he was declared academically ineligible for his senior season. He could still get a chance impress some scouts enough to be given a shot at making a roster.

Somers just said this:
UPDATE: Just returned from a conference call with Calvin. He said his ineligibility stemmed from flunking a class last spring. He said he had a couple deaths in the family and left school without notifying instructors. He failed a class, and a couple of appeals were rejected.

I got some info from one of the guys who was at the Troy Pro Day. He hand timed with him with a best of 4.5. His general athletic performance rated medium in most of the drills and his dedication level seems to be a concern. Calvin declined to lift during the weight portion of the drills. BTW, he wasn’t nearly as highly thought of as Tolar, who had far more recent game time observations. Sorry, I didn’t realize you wanted film on Tolar. Here’s a fun one you can access on Calvin. Calvin is #14 and he’s the guy running back the interception at the beginning.

There should be quite a bit of film on the New Orleans Bowl from 2008. Calvin ran an interception back for a TD in that one.

He is regarded as a ball-hawk. He had several interceptions, fumble recoveries and blocked kicks between his JUCO and Troy careers. He is not a great tackler. His speed and marginal athleticism make his top likely at Nickel, but he could excel at special teams especially as a gunner if his tackling improves.
