New York Times article.

Wizards Shopping Brown
Larry Hughes's announced defection from Washington to Cleveland could provide the Knicks with a new chance to pry center Kwame Brown from the Wizards. But landing Brown remains a long shot.

Hughes, the Wizards' starting off guard last season, agreed Friday to sign with the Cavaliers. Washington is inviting sign-and-trade offers for Brown, a restricted free agent, and will seek a shooting guard in return.

If the Knicks want Brown, it will cost them Quentin Richardson, according to an Eastern Conference team executive who has been briefed on the talks. The executive requested anonymity to avoid jeopardizing potential deals.

Richardson's salary, $6.3 million, makes him a good fit in a trade for Brown, who is expected to earn something in that price range in a new contract. But the Knicks just recently acquired Richardson, in a trade for Kurt Thomas, and would be reluctant to part with him while gambling on Brown. The first pick in the 2001 draft, Brown has yet to establish himself as a full-time starter.

The Wizards like Knicks forward Mike Sweetney, who played at Georgetown. But Sweetney's salary is too low and his potential too limited to make a deal work. The Knicks could balance salaries by placing Malik Rose ($6 million) or Jerome Williams ($6.1 million) in the deal, but the Wizards have no interest in either player.

With limited assets to offer in trades, and only the mid-level exception (about $5 million) to offer free agents, the Knicks may have to set their sights lower. Seattle's Jerome James and Phoenix's Steven Hunter are more realistic targets.

I thought I read somewhere that one reason Isiah had acquired so many players in the last couple of years was so that he could make more deals. Q for Kwame does make sense for them, they still have Crawford, Penny at the 2. There is no way to trade Penny and Crawford was a priority sign and trade last season. Crawford, Marbury and Robinson make for a good rotation in the backcourt and it may force Q to play SF again. If Q ends up in Washington is pretty much his job at the 2 spot and I think that this is a no brainer for the Wizards.

If Richardson ends up getting traded for Kurt Thomas and Kwame Brown in the same summer, I think it's safe to say that his trade value was fairly high.

First of all, if I'm Washington I don't want Q with his contract. I like Kurt Thomas for the Phoenix Suns, but I doubt the trade market for him was all that hot given his age and contract. Remember that the Phoenix Suns had to include the #21 pick in a deep draft to get the deal done.

They have to do something to replace Hughes now. That is a pretty glaring hole they created. A prime example of why you shouldn't low ball UFAs.

I guess if I was Washington I would aim higher than Q at over $7 million per season

Heck, at current rates, that's a bargain.

I still wouldn't call him a bargain or even a very good deal. Simmons shot the ball much better last season on a far worse team, and his new contract will average just over $9 million per season.

All of these guys are making too much money. The market is ridiculous right now.

True that. I actually think Q would be a pretty good fit in Washington. I didn't watch to much from them last season, but it seems like have two big scorers who are slashers would be a little redundant on offense. Q would get some open looks, and could show off his post up game.

Hell, it is a lot better fit than NY.

I think there is just as much chance that Crawford gets moved.

Might make sense now since Hughes is expected to sign with Cavs

Unless they think Jarvis Hayes can fill in the SG, trading Kwame for Q might actually help them out

Hollinger from insider talk..........

-----------------------------------------------

JD in DC: What's the word on Kwame Brown??? I've heard him linked to Michael Sweetney, Quentin Richardson, Darius Miles, and Al Harrington... Have you heard anything??? Depending on what report you believe, 7 or 9 teams have expressed interest to Grunfeld... What's the best the Wizards can expect to get for him???

John Hollinger: I'm absolutely flabbergasted by how many teams are reported to be interested in Brown. I was thinking the Wizards would be lucky to sign-and-trade him for Jacque Vaughn, and instead teams are throwing guys like Sweetney (who is both better AND younger) at them. Ernie Grunfeld has to be laughing himself to sleep at night.

Everyone who watched Brown play came away with the same impression - incredible talent and no consistency. He would get 11 rebounds one night and 2 the next. Those flashes keep people intrigued, but after 4 years you'd expect to see a bit more than flashes.

The thing about Brown is that on top of his inconsistencies he has pretty bad hands. I read somewhere that they are quite small, and I've seen myself that he drops a lot of passes.

I wonder how long it will be before big man prospects are measured for "finger span."

I suspect that small hands are a serious liability, but big hands aren't necessarily a sign of being good. Jahadi White appeared to have very big hands and it was certainly difficult to knock the ball out of his grip - but the ball tended to bounce off them.

BTW, if Amare had gone out for football rather than basketball, I could well imagine him an all pro tight end with the way he catches the ball.

Just big men? I recall something being said about Dr. J having huge hands enablling him to do some incredible things with a basketball. There's probably a reason why Marion really can jump but never invited to the Slam Dunk Championship (not like it's a really big deal any way)

If I were a draft scout, I would probably look into foot size too for big men.

Why anyone would want Kwame Brown is beyond my reasoning. After 4 years of nothing, it is obvious he has neither desire nor common sense. He is the definition of " shortcut ".

I actually saw that one before I went back to the main page. I thought it was pretty funny, so I left it for you guys.

Lately the word "team" has been frequently misrecognized as "teen" making for some pretty interesting and somewhat disturbing phrases and sentences in my posts. If I see them I definitely don't lead those mistakes because I don want people thinking I'm some sort of creep. :)

well it looks like Q value is dropping fast if the knicks are thinking of trading him for kwame brown. maybe just maybe the knick found out about that trade kicker that Q has. you know the one where brady follows him around where ever he goes. heck if i were them i would be looking for a way i could unload him to just to get rid of her :biglaugh:

new york has it bad enough with spike lee going to all the knick games, they dont need brady on top of that.

That leaves only one thing left to measure. I'm sure it has to do with basketball prowess somehow, but it's not the sort of thing you see on the court.
