I talked to Ron Wolfley and Paul Calvisi last night after their performance at the Big Red Army rally (check out the website, its not done yet but is going to be great: http://www.azcardsfanclub.com/)

I reminded them of the difference it made having the crowd behind the team at home. I told them they should mention that when they are firing up the fans. I actually poked Wolf in the chest and said "you never had that when you played for the Cardinals, how would it have felt to have that noise behind you when you were a player?" Wolfley started making deep growling wild animal noises (he's hysterical) and said it would have been awesome. He said that three days ago Coach Whisenhunt told him the noise at the Eagle's game was the loudest he has heard in his entire NFL career. I told them that I appreciated what they do in supporting the team and that it is the owner, the coach, the players, the media and the fans that make a winning franchise, that in fact, We Do This Together.

I love Wolf. I know some people think he's nothing but a side-show who adds nothing, but I love the guy and love having him associated with the team in any capacity...

I've said this before about that Eagles game... Growing up attending so many HUGE games at Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden, I thought I would never see or hear crowds like I did back then. But I would easily place the Eagles game on the same plateau in terms of pure noice... I will never, ever forget how loud it was that day...

Glad to hear it. I had a great time too. I'm looking forward to "Doug and Wolf " at 5 am tomorrow on 620 AM. Wolf always gets fired up this time of year.

For sure... though, I wish Wolf was teamed up with someone else... I am not a fan of Doug at all.

Teams need unique characteristics to grow into something special:

- A cheer (Jets-Jets-Jets!)

- A prop (Terrible towel)

- An end zone dance (Billy White Shoes)

- A fan tradition (The One Man Baltimore Colt Alphabet Cheerleader)

- "An alumni association" (Musial, Schoendienst, Slaughter, Gibby, Ozzie, Hornsby, Frisch...)

- A mascot (Philly Phanatic. Fredbird)

- A venu (Wrigley)

- A "voice of the team (Carey, Buck, Facenda, Kallis).

And now Wolf

Out of all the things you stated above that the Cards need, what do the Patriots have?
Sometimes it just takes a few key players and coming along at the right time.

A camera? Har.

The '01 Patriots had the identity of a 'team' and that was all.

This offensive explosion non-sense started with Moss, Welker, and a high % of shotgun (although probably not as high as the Cardinals).

First, let's agree that there's a difference between (a) a good football team - even a consistently good one and (b) a team that has great fan support and is a fixture in its city.

For example, the Cubs have great tradition, but they haven't won all that much over the years.

Certainly, winning makes it easier for a franchise to build tradition/fan support & it appears that the Cards are beginning to do just that.

As for the Pats: (1) They are winning. (2) I don't follow them that closely so I don't know what traditions, legends, cheers etc. they might have and (3) you might make the case that the very fact that Boston is a very ardent sports town that supports EVERY professional team - Sox, Bruins, Celts and Pats - is a tradition, in and of itself, that helps make their teams unique and special.
