If the Cards are picking top 15, maybe they can find a team willing to do a deal for the Cards #1 , the Cards get the lower #1 and get back into the 2nd round, where there is great value.

I project that we will be picking at #12 which should give us a good crack at Jonathan Martin (OT) or Courtney Upshaw (OLB), players at positions of real need.

If they are gone, a trade down that would give us a 2nd rounder makes some sense.

Is there a precedent for getting a second-round pick in the same draft for moving down 5 to 8 spots in the first? Hard to see we'd get more than a third or 2013 second in that deal.

Last year the Jags gave up their first (16) and 2nd rounders to the Redskins for the number 10 pick so they could take Gabbert.

That's a trade into the top 10, though. We'd be looking at moving from 14 to 22 or something. Don't think you get a second rounder for that.

I think the only way you get a 2nd would be if the last QB was there

Barkley staying hurts that scenario. After Luck and RG3, the last one is Landry Jones- who has not helped himself this year.

Here is the nice thing about #12-#16 range of the first round: the Cards will likely have their choice of three players all rated at that spot (I.e. the BPAs at that point in the draft) who all play a position of some need.

I think there will be some "safe" picks there: either of the two Stanford offensive lineman and/or Upshaw the LB from Alabama

There will also be some high upside /risk guys there: Wiley from The Illini, etc

if we pick around 14-15...it might be an idea to get that guard who is rated so high......Then find a safety in the third...LB in the fourth,...OT in the fifth.

Good points. OT Reiff from Iowa could also be there. We could also go WR there. Jeffrey and Floyd. I really like the idea of DeCastro, whom you referred to. Guard is not as great a need as OT, but the line needs an infusion. If he's anything like Hutchinson as has been stated, that would be a solid pick.

I am hoping Cards pick BPA, but I am not so sure. If DeCastro is that player so be it, but we really don't need another offensive guard. Hadnot, Colledge, and Lutui are all serviceable. I also think that Levi would be a perennial Pro Bowler at guard.

I would rank Cards deficiencies a follows: An offensive tackle (or two), a playmaking linebacker (outside >inside), and a secondary threat at WR.

Offensive tackles and rush linebackers are very difficult to find outside of the draft. As much as I would like to draft BPA, the Cards have only 1 pick in first two rounds and will be forced to go position of need with that pick. Middle of the round can be a good spot if someone falls in the draft, lets hope a WR (Ashlon Jefrey) or tackle (Jonathon Martin) is available. Similar to the Patrick Peterson pick it could end up BPA and fill a team need. I like this guy's recently updated mock draft: http://walterfootball.com/draft2012.php

Oh I hope we don't draft an OG they will try to make him an OT like they did with Brown and Davis.

There is a LT at Iowa State that very well may slide under the radar, but the talk around here is that he could project very well in the NFL. His wingspan is huge and he played very well against some good teams. Sorry I don't remember his name.

I gotta be honest I'm torn. The comments from Kolb concern the hell out of me that his concussion thing is going to be a consistent problem.

So I'm really wondering if I'm the Cards and the Colts are open to it do you offer them 3 number 1 picks for the chance to draft Luck?

I don't think they'll do it I think they'll pick Luck and have him backup Manning until he's ready to transition.

There's a rumor floating around that Landry Jones will go back to school.

I don't think Martin or DeCastro are safe picks. Last year was a loaded draft, that may not be seen for a long time. The LBer to take in that area might be Luke Keuchly, who could be plugged in Day one , game 1 and be there for ten years.

Martin will most likely be a RT in the NFL, but he'll be decent at that position. DeCastro has All-Pro Guard written all over him, he does everything good. He's very similar to Hutchinson in terms of his skill sets, he would be a steal if we could get him in the teens. Martin, at Tackle, is still a better option than both Keith and Brown.

I think Martin is one of those guys that people are downgrading for some reason. I think he'll play LT from day 1 in the NFL and be a good one. As for the original question, it's hard to say. I doubt it unless a top flight CB slides down the board.

Every year this comes up.

It depends on the nature of the pool of talent.

If it's deep enough in talented players who fit what we're looking for and the plateau is wide enough so that we can trade down without passing up players at a higher talent-level, we can afford to trade down.

But if we pass on, say, a potential All Pro like Terrell Suggs in order to land less talented prospects like Bryant Johnson or Calvin Pace, that's not very cool.

Out of DeCastro, Martin and Reiff, I prefer them in that order.

Trading back will be a considered option, but someone will have to drop for a team to really want to move up. Alshon Jeffery might be a guy like that, or Trent Richardson because of the positions that they play.

Trading up for Luck would be a smart move for Arizona, but I don't see the Cardinals as being the type of organization to take that gamble.

While I have a hard time seeing the Saints letting him go, why wouldn't the Cardinals offer Drew Brees 5 years, and make him that highest paid QB in the NFL? We have the room and if you backload the deal, you would eventually hit the beginning years of the TV contracts which will be the next big increase in the salary cap. Offseason plan would go restructure Levi Brown, resign Calais Campbell, sign Drew Brees and Carl Nicks. If the Saints slap him w/ the franchise tag, you give up the two first rounders. (No way this happens by the way on the Cardinals end). This allows you to release Kolb (due to his concussion issues), you still have Skelton to develop, and your biggest weakness, offense, now is a strength. You still have issues at OT, but you draft some developmental guys in the 3rd - 7th rounds, and Brees' quick release will take care of the rest.

Chopp - I get your thinking, but (other than restructuring Levi) I did not see anything about rebuilding the O-line.

Do you really want to invest all that much in a new star QB only to get him killed back there?

Carl Nicks is a pro bowl OG. Put him or Colledge w/ Brown on the right side. That would make 4 out of 5 line positions serviceable until we were able to develop some OTs. Look, the FA market is bare at OT. You might take a stap at Gaither or D Bell (from Buffalo) but they might not even hit the open market. That leaves the draft as the only avenue to upgrade at OT, and (in this scenario) we probably would have to give up draft picks to sign Brees. Brees can make OTs better ala Warner, so it lessens the need a little, but multiple picks in rounds 3-7 would need to address the OT position. While not ideal, you can get by at OT when you put the play next to a vet OG and have a really good vet QB under center.
