Salazar, Montero, and Ojeda have all performed well in their pinch hitting or spot start appearances, so there isn't exactly a need for Owings to handle that duty. I'm not necessarily opposed to it, but the potential for injury (such as when he tweaked his ankle about a week ago) is a bit concerning.

:yeahthat:

I can't say that there is anything in that post that I do not agree with.

I'd like to see him pinch hit once in a while, such as days when we have a starter or two resting and we are using a couple of those bench guys. He could do a very nice job as our DH.

I was thinking it would be cool if he hit fro himself in an AL park. Has that happened since the DH was created?
On the other hand, if he would hit in every 5th game, when facing an AL team on the road, why not do it the day he's not pitching?

Use him while he's resting between starts rather than when he's working seven innings.

The DH rules are really convoluted, but im pretty sure if you use the pitcher to bat, you forfeit the DH

I think that's what he meant, just let Owings hit and don't even use the DH.

I'd like to see them do that and it would be cool to see him in as the DH in a game that he's not pitching.

Yes. He's a really fine batter with power to spare. he'd be a better DH than any of the PH and several regulars.

Yes, but if he is DHing on a day where he is pitching, and then they have to remove him, they lose their DH spot.
He wouldn't be the DH. You can't be the pitcher plus the DH. He would be hitting for himself as the pitcher just like an NL game. Then if he had to come out they could pinch hit with someone else just like normal NL games. I'd like to see them do it... I don't know if it's ever happened before but it would be neat to see.

Yeah, so if Owings was hitting for himself and then was removed, the Diamondbacks would have to continue using pinch hitters in the pitcher's spot, in essence forgoing the DH for the rest of the game. That's quite a disadvantage in an AL game.

I would agree but I'm just going back to devilalum's post asking if a team has ever just not used the DH before in an AL game and I was just saying it would be cool if the D-Backs did it if Owings is pitching.
