Salazar, Montero, and Ojeda have all performed well in their pinch hitting or spot start appearances, so there isn't exactly a need for Owings to handle that duty. I'm not necessarily opposed to it, but the potential for injury (such as when he tweaked his ankle about a week ago) is a bit concerning.
Only if hes not pitching
On the other hand, if he would hit in every 5th game, when facing an AL team on the road, why not do it the day he's not pitching?I was thinking it would be cool if he hit fro himself in an AL park. Has that happened since the DH was created?

I think that's what he meant, just let Owings hit and don't even use the DH.The DH rules are really convoluted, but im pretty sure if you use the pitcher to bat, you forfeit the DH
Yes, but if he is DHing on a day where he is pitching, and then they have to remove him, they lose their DH spot.I think that's what he meant, just let Owings hit and don't even use the DH.
He wouldn't be the DH. You can't be the pitcher plus the DH. He would be hitting for himself as the pitcher just like an NL game. Then if he had to come out they could pinch hit with someone else just like normal NL games. I'd like to see them do it... I don't know if it's ever happened before but it would be neat to see.Yes, but if he is DHing on a day where he is pitching, and then they have to remove him, they lose their DH spot.
Yeah, so if Owings was hitting for himself and then was removed, the Diamondbacks would have to continue using pinch hitters in the pitcher's spot, in essence forgoing the DH for the rest of the game. That's quite a disadvantage in an AL game.He wouldn't be the DH. You can't be the pitcher plus the DH. He would be hitting for himself as the pitcher just like an NL game. I would agree but I'm just going back to devilalum's post asking if a team has ever just not used the DH before in an AL game and I was just saying it would be cool if the D-Backs did it if Owings is pitching.Yeah, so if Owings was hitting for himself and then was removed, the Diamondbacks would have to continue using pinch hitters in the pitcher's spot, in essence forgoing the DH for the rest of the game.
