Absolutely not. There is no reason we can't develop a QB in time to still take advantage of Fitz's prime.

And please tell when's the last time that's happened? Plus I'm dying to hear when & where do we get one? :D They don't grow on trees like you guys think they do.

Unlike some, I think there's some solid kids to be had in the draft this year. It hasn't happened before because sans Matt Leinart, we haven't tried in decades. I'm sick and tired of retreads or QBs drafted in the 3rd round or later that we're praying to hit on.

Why would the Bengals trade with us in the first place? Forgetting they have a guy by the name of AJ Green?

The thing with Fitz is, he stays in good shape and has stayed relatively injury free. He is also almost like another WR coach, and sets a standard for working hard that rubs off most of the time. Has the ability to tweet a rookie WR across the country for offseason workouts. Also helps with perception of the organization. Which in a perfect world wouldn't matter, but losing him, loses a good recruiting asset. He also gives us an aura of legitimacy....at least when we don't perform like last season.

Jerry Rice played well into what being about 40 or so? While you can never count on that for any player, if any WR is capable of matching that it's Fitz.

Therefore we might still be able to see Fitz play at a high level for another 10 years.

Finally you have the cap implications. We have a flat cap, and it will stay flat most likely for another couple of years, and with a 50 million dollar bonus (or in guaranteed money at least) that would mean we'd have paid him a ton, and he is on our cap for a lot going forward. So there is no way we can afford to bring in some replacement. We don't have the cap space.

Therefore any trade wouldn't just be giving up all the above, but giving one of the best receivers, if not the best receivers in football away to a team that then has a competitive advantage against all 31 other teams.......

....they would have a top flight WR, while only counting half or less against the cap as anyone else with the same. Since their cap hit on Fitz would only be his base salary and any future bonuses.

How about we trade Fitz & all our draft picks to the Colts for Andrew Luck? :D
Now that's the way to win.

Their is too much of a cap hit to trade Fitz.

You all who are saying this please explain with specific numbers. Very irrelevant to just keep saying the words "too much". Be specific for those of us who don't know or understand the individual cap situations.

Don't have the numbers, but the way it works in trades is that any bonus paid is kept on the books of the Cardinals and any unpaid bonus plus base salary is on the books of the new team.

Seeing how Fitz was given close to 50 million in bonuses, alot of it paid upfront, which amounts to about 1/2 the contract nearly. What was it 106 million total or thereabouts?

The thing I don't know procedural wise is if all the remaining 'bonus' we gave him is still spread out along the length of the contract or if it is accelerated in a two year period.

If it's spread out, and I know you want solid figures, sorry, just guesstimates, then if we've paid out say 35 in bonuses so far of the 50, and it is spread out over the life of the contract, then we'd probably be on the hook for about 4-5 million per year of cap space for the next 6 years.

If it's accelerated to two years that would be like 12 million or so.

Basically the key thing to know is that if we trade Fitz, almost half of what Fitz makes will be against OUR cap, and the rest will be on the THEIR cap.

Pretty stupid if you ask me to basically have our cap millions under everyone elses, while not only giving someone else a mega star and basically be giving them a few extra million of cap space for the next 6 years.

Actually now that I think it about it, I want to say it may be a little less of a hit. I want to say now he had about 37-38 mill in bonuses, not 50. 50 may have been Calvin Johnson. Making those adjustments might add or subtract 500k-1 mill per season, each season, over 6 seasons (or if spread over only 2, ~3x that). It all depends on how many, if any roster bonuses appear later in his contract.

Either way fitz has a significant cap hit just due to his bonuses that have been paid and will need to be charged on our cap. I'd much rather have him here as cap wise it would be similar to signing another Stewart Bradley, but over 6 years, and have him on IR all 6 years. Plus create a huge hole that would need to be filled by a guy who if we don't have, we'll suck, and if we do have, might be a guy we need to pay alot to as well.

In a climate of salary cap stagnation, purposefully adding dead cap space would be a very tough pill to swallow and would be extremely foolish under almost any scenario. With any scenario needing a hope and a prayer to work out. Such as, hitting on the draft picks like the Cowboys did with the Herschel Walker trade. Something that is near impossible and is an impossible risk to justify.
